Synopsis

"Homer publicly disparages a pop singer and faces the ire of her vindictive and highly organized fan army."

Plot

Homer and Bart go to a Springfield Isotopes game to see the pitcher, Chuck Wildler, break the pitching record for most batters knocked unconscious. When they get into the stadium, they find it full of young girls. Confused about this, they get ready to watch the game. However, the Jumbotron starts playing a video from the Murmur Nation about pop singer Ashlee Starling's new song, "Glitter". The song starts playing as the crowd of girls hold up panels to make large signs in the stands. Homer asks Bart who Ashlee Starling is, and Bart calls her a "whiny pop singer for whiny girls who love to whine." Due to the girls holding up the signs, Homer and Bart miss the record breaking pitch, so they leave. Next to the concessions stand, Kent Brockman thinks Homer is an Ashlee Starling fan and interviews him about the singer. Homer repeats Bart's words to Kent, whilst Bart distances himself from the words and Homer. When Homer asks Bart why he did this, Bart tells him that he is a dead man.

When Homer is driving the next day, the car's radio starts to play "Glitter". Whilst he's trying to change the station, only to have the song keep coming up, a doll based on Ashlee Starling is thrown onto his car, causing him to crash and glitter to come out of the airbag. When Homer gets to work, he gets attacked by birds. Lenny and Carl tell Homer that he has made the power plant a dangerous place to work and they have to support Ashlee Starling so they don't get caught in the crossfire. When Homer gets home from work, Bart confronts him and tells Homer that he has to repent to stop the attacks. Homer refuses to do so and is attacked by birds at work again the next day. Lisa is then revealed to be part of the Murmur Nation, along with Mackenzie and Billy.

Homer is reduced to hiding out at home. When he goes out to get the newspaper, he gets grabbed by people and taken to Echo Studios where he meets Echo, Ashlee Starling's rival. Echo tells Homer that he will be under the protection of her fans, the Echolaliacs. Meanwhile, Bart tells Lisa that he knows she is part of the Murmur Nation and wants in because he wants access to Lisa's army for his pranks. Lisa accepts and the Murmur Nation attempt to pull off a prank at Barney's Bowlarama. However, their prank is foiled by the Echolaliacs, who then proceed to attack the Murmur Nation. This then leads to al all out war between the two fan armies and Springfield becomes a mess. Marge is then interviewed by Kent Brockman about Homer, and Marge says that she likes Ashlee Starling's music. Meanwhile, Bart is kicked out of the Murmur Nation because he wasn't excited enough to meet Mackenzie's dog.

A package is delivered to the Simpson house by Ashlee Starling's live-in aerialists. Opening the package, Lisa finds that Ashlee Starling is inviting her for dinner and gave her a dress to wear. However, Lisa then realizes that it's for Marge, not her. Marge goes to dinner with Ashlee, who gets her drunk. The next day, Lisa reveals to Marge that Ashlee Starling made a song about the bad parts of Homer and Marge's relationship, called "The Way You Was". Homer also finds out that Bart and Lisa were behind the attacks on him, so he leaves the house and goes to Echo Studios. Homer talks to Echo about what his family did and Echo helps Homer to make a song for them. Homer returns home after three days to show his family "The Meltdown". The song explains how much Homer cares about each of his family members, which leads to the family making up again.

Another day, Mackenzie and Billy go to the Simpson house to tell Homer that they have stopped the attacks on him. The family then talk about psychotic fandoms and how crazy it is to get mixed up in groups like that. Marge then realizes that the family are late for church so they rush to get ready to go.
