- The title is a reference to the American film Any Given Sunday.
- Lisa owns a "My Little Sony" camera. A reference to both My Little Pony and Sony.
- Seymour Skinner thinks Lisa is a gifted filmmaker and says "it's as if Ingmar Bergman and Penny Marshall had a baby". Bergman is considered to be among the most accomplished and influential filmmakers of all time.
- The scripts Skinner wrote When Edna Met Seymour is a parody of When Harry Met Sally....
- Skinner says he is no longer welcomed at Universal Studios tour, and Lisa asks him whether it is Universal Orlando or Universal Studios Hollywood.
- Lisa mentions the six elements Aristotle considered drama to be composed of: plot, theme, character, language, rhythm, and spectacle.
- Skinner has an empty cabinet for an Oscar award.
- Marge loved the documentary So You've Bought a Toro that came with the lawnmower. Toro is an American turf maintenance equipment company.

- The film festival Skinner thinks of is Banff Mountain Film Festival. Chalmers corrects him and tells him that it is the Sundance Film Festival he was referring to.
- The sign at the Sundance Film Festival cabin says "Do Not Feed Ben Affleck".
- While trying to find a movie that did not belong to the mainstream media, a Sundance organizer reads a submission's logline which described "Paul Giamatti is the world's greatest superspy who only exists in the mind of an overweight, agoraphobic jazz musician played by Martin Lawrence in a fat suit". Giamatti is an American actor who won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead in 2004, while Lawrence is known for his work in mainstream sitcoms and films.
- Lisa's documentary Capturing the Simpsons is a reference to Capturing the Friedmans, a documentary that focuses on the investigation of Arnold and Jesse Friedman for child molestation
- Homer makes fun of some charities, such as Save the Children, Sierra Club, Doctors Without Borders and Greenpeace.
- American actor and director Robert Redford send a letter to Lisa saying that her film was accepted in Sundance. When Homer was about to cut the envelope, he says "Guess what? A scissor runs through it". This is a reference to the film A River Runs Through It, which was directed by Redford.
- When Homer imagines the film festival, the traditional Mexican song "Jarabe Tapatío" (Mexican hat dance) is heard.
- The sign at Sundance Film Festival mentioned American actress Parker Posey, who was nominated twice for the Independent Spirit Award.
