Cultural references

• The episode's title is a reference to the Changing of the Guard.
• Homer prays that if dies in the tornado, he wants to be taken to Oz. However, he doesn't want Flanders to be the scarecrow.

Trivia

• Ling Bouvier, who was previously seen as a baby, was seen to have aged a couple of years. This makes Ling one of the few characters on the show to have physically aged since the show began.
• This episode was censored in Oklahoma due to the 2013 Moore tornado.

Homers says that Carl sounded more like a white guy then a black guy is a Reference to the Facted Carl is voiced by Hank" Azaria who also does the voices of many other black and Spanish charters on the show such as Lou,Apu Nick Riviera Bumblebee Man and Drederick Tatum.

Carl explication he's is just trying to fit in.

Goofs

• When Santa's Little Helper is being blown away by the tornado, there are two errors:
  • In one shot, the underneath of one of Santa's Little Helper's paws has been colored in wrong.
  • When the dog is howling, the howling sounds do not match Santa's Little Helper's mouth's movements.
