Missionary: Impossible

Wikisimpsons - The Simpsons Wiki

While watching the rowdy British sitcom "Do Shut Up" on PBS, Homer becomes annoyed by the interruption of the telethon. To get back to the program quickly, Homer calls in a phony pledge of an extremely large amount of money. When the public broadcasting station tracks him down and demands he pay up, he is pursued by various PBS-type characters (Britcom characters, lazer-shooting Teletubbies, a particularly violent Mr. Rogers.). Fleeing to the church seeking sanctuary, Reverend Lovejoy offers him a job as a missionary in a foriegn country -- where he can stay until the heat is off. When Homer arrives at the small island nation he is to preach to, he is at first reluctant to do anything besides lick toads. When he finally dedicates himself to true missionary work, his efforts accidentally end up corrupting the indigenious island people and the village is destroyed by a volcano.

Quotes

Homer: (Running into the church) SANCTUARY! SANCTUARY! Rev. Lovejoy: (sighing) I wish I'd never taught him that word.

Homer: Missionary? But I don't even believe in Jeebus!

Homer: Save me, Jeebus!

References

- "Do Shut Up" is probably a parody of The Young Ones, a similarly chaotic Britcom that ran on English t.v. in the early 1980's, known for its lowbrow characters who shared a similarly dismal house and spent much of the show bashing each other over the head with household items.

- The telethon scene at the end features various FOX characters as phone operators, including Bender from Futurama.
