"Jaws Wired Shut" is the ninth episode of Season 13. It originally aired on January 27, 2002. The episode was written by Matt Selman and directed by Nancy Kruse.

Homer breaks his jaw in an accident, requiring it to be wired shut for a month. His resulting inability to talk makes him a better listener, and he becomes closer to family and friends because of it. They all like the new Homer much better, but when the wires come off and Homer retains his new attitude, everyone begins to miss the old Homer's antics.

Plot

Homer is relaxing in the yard in his hammock whilst reading his magazine. He hears a noise coming from the street he follows the noise to see a gay pride parade. The family then go to the cinema to get away from the gay pride parade, but the movie is preceded by a seemingly endless run of previews and advertisements. This angers everyone in the theater, and Homer stands up to lead the angry mob. However, the ushers beat Homer with giant Kit Kats and chase him out. Homer runs into the fist of a newly built statue of Drederick Tatum during the chase, breaking his jaw.

At the hospital, Dr. Hibbert explains that he has wired Homers jaws shut in order for it to repair itself. Homer cannot eat because of this which upsets him as he has to have liquidized food. Homer sits at Moe's Tavern as Duff Man enters with a question for everyone in order for them to win a life time supply of Duff. Homer knows the answer but cannot say because of his wired jaw and misses out which upsets him. Homer is laid in bed with Marge and writes on his chalkboard (as he cannot talk) "how was your day". Marge is surprised Homer asked this as he never listens to anyone. The next morning Homer feeds Maggie the next morning another thing which he never does. Lisa walks in from a day of school. Homer writes whats wrong. Lisa is surprised by this. Lisa explains that Ralph Wiggum has angered her. Lisa appreciates that her father is listening to her and they hug. Homer is then with Bart building a plane in his room. Bart explains he is upset of himself becoming a class clown. Homer also listens to one of Grampa's stories. Marge tells Homer about the "Annual Springfield Formal Event".

She explains that she wants to go there because Homer is becoming nicer and listens to people after his jaw was broken. At the event Marge and Homer speak to Mr. Burns. Homer writes he is hungry but Mr. Burns mistakes it as the music is from Hungary. Mr. Burns give him some cash for recognising this. Homer politely tells the waiter he doesn't want to eat some shrimp which is being offered to him. A lady sees this and says he and Marge are a nice couple and wants them to dine with her at Toad Hall. Marge explains to Homer whilst dancing that this evening has been one of the most magical nights of her life. They see Dr. Hibbert on the dancefloor where he explains that he can remove his Jaw Brace the next day. Home gets his brace removed the next day at the hospital. Later, at Moe's Tavern, Homer explains that he liked having his brace on because he listened to people at lot more. Lindsey Naegle approaches Homer in the Tavern and tells him he is an enlightened man and wants him to appear on her show.

Homer and Marge appear on the "Afternoon Yak" show. Marge explains what kind of man he was before him breaking his jaw and how much he has changed after he broke it. They show a clip of Homer getting beaten up by an ostrich. Homer promises Marge that he will not revert back to his former self. Marge thinks Homer is turning back to himself as he yells "i'm gonna kill you!" but it turns out it is the name of the play he is rehearsing with Bart. Marge tells herself that everything is okay when she is sat on the couch on her own and tries to scratch a freckle off her skin. Later on, in bed, Marge thinks to herself that now Homer has changed her life has become boring.

She sees a flier about the "Demolition Derby" and walks off there for some excitement. Homer wakes up and realises where she has gone and runs after her. Marge is in the demolition pit in her car smashing into everyone with it. Marge starts to feel scared as she is battered by another car. Lisa, Bart and Homer spot her in the pit. Bart gives Homer some duff to power him up to save Marge. Homer enters the pit on a donkey but the donkey tires so Homer gives it some duff and it falls asleep drunk. Marge is in the car and Homer rescues her through the broken windscreen. They embrace were Marge explains she isn't the live wire of the family. Homer says it's OK and walks out of the Demolition Derby with her.
