- Moe's evil smile and the rat with an antler tied to its head parodies the 1966 TV special How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
- The rhyme Skinner says when chasing Bart "Skate, skate as fast as you can. But I'll catch you, I'm the principal man", is a reference to The Gingerbread Man fairy tale. In some retellings, the Gingerbread Man taunts his pursuers with the famous line: "Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!".
- At the Body Shop, Raphael quotes "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go". This phrase is attributed to Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde, although no source in Wilde's writings has been found.
- Snake's son, Jeremy Jailbird, plays the butcher in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.
- Lucas Bortner has a T-shirt with a picture of Japanese competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi. Lucas also refers to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest when he says that the current record is 69. Homer also compares Marge to Philadelphia Phillies manager Ben Chapman. During a game in 1947, Chapman called Robinson a "nigger" from their dugout and yelled that he should "go back to the cotton fields".
- Patty calls Lucas "Justin Blobber", in a pun on Justin Bieber.
- The scene where Homer is sleepwalking is a reference to Bizkit, the sleepwalking dog. A video of this dog went viral in 2009. Homer does exactly the same movements, including hitting his head on the wall.
