Cultural references
- One of the teams Springfield plays against is from Arlen, Texas, the fictional setting for King of the Hill. A number of the shows main characters appear in the stands.
- In the flashback Marge has a "Farrah-do", a "Farrah-flip", or simply "Farrah hair," eponymous hairstyle trend popularized by Farrah Fawcett.
Trivia
- We learn that Homer was a great gymnast back in high school, but failed because Abe Simpson didn't believe in him.
- Before Nelson hikes the ball, he yells "5F03! Hike!" 5F03 is the production code for this episode.
- Syndicated versions cut the part after Bart is pushed in the mud by Nelson where Ralph says "You're going to heaven".
- Syndication cuts the first part of the Kwik-E-Mart scene where Bart plays a video game called Cat Fight where teenaged girls beat each other up ("I'll scratch you" "The hair!" "Slut!" "Loser!")
- Homer cuts Martin from the team, but in later scenes, he is still there.
- When Homer bought the Beer and Skittles, he had money, but just a few minutes ago, Nelson stole his wallet.
- Either Sherri or Terri has a crush on Bart.
- Over the ending credits, Homer starts cutting the cast, crew and guest stars too. He then cuts "Shushy", the woman who shushes in the Gracie Films "logo".
- We learn that Lenny once dated Marge, although it is unknown how far their relationship went.

Goofs
- During the scene where Bart lies to Homer about injuries, the plaster on his nose disappears and appears between shots.
- At Milhouse's house, the picture on the wall of Milhouse and Luann Van Houten depicts them both with black rims for glasses instead of the usual red ones.
- In a faraway shot prior to the first game, Lewis's hair is a light blond-brown instead of its usual dark gray.
- In the audience at the soccer field, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has black hair.
- In one scene, Sherri/Terri is shown with yellow skin.
- Jerri Mackleberry wears a purple dress initially, but when she is cheering towards the end, her dress is blue.
