The Shahryār was the king of Persia.
History
He had many wives, one of which was a storyteller. She told him the story of Ali Baba and How the Camel Got His Hump to stop him from throwing her in the pit of boring wives. When he fell asleep, the storyteller lowered a ladder into the pit and rescued everyone (except one who wanted to stay in the pit). They then killed the guards and then killed the king, putting his head on a pike.
