Cultural references
- The title and basic plot are both references to the 1998 comedy The Truman Show.
- In describing The Homer Show, one of the FOX executives says that it's going to be big, "Urkel big".
- When the FOX executives are trying to find a spot in their programming to air The Homer Show, one of the executives suggests that they replace Millennium.
- One of the execs mentions another FOX show, When Pets Go Postal, a reference to When Animals Attack!.
Trivia
- Dr. Marvin Monroe is seen in plain sight at the town meeting, despite the retirement and supposed death of his character in The Simpsons at the time.
Continuity
- Groundskeeper Willie is shown to still be secretly videotaping people, previously seen in "Homer Badman".
