Cultural references
- When the Discount Lion Safari employee scares away the lions with a shotgun, he says "Mr. Simpson, I presume?", a reference to famous greeting "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" by Henry Morton Stanley to David Livingstone.
- While walking through the slums of Springfield, Grampa goes to the Nighthawk Diner, a homage to the Edward Hopper painting Nighthawks.
- Darth Vader and The Joker can be seen waiting in line as a candidate for Grampa donating his money.
- Dr. Marvin Monroe's "Monroe Box" is a spoofing of B. F. Skinner's controversial "Skinner Box."
- In Plato's Republic Casino, Grampa Simpson quotes Rudyard Kipling's If—.
- Abe and Bea crossing each other's arms while taking their medicine is similar to a scene in the film Tom Jones.
Trivia
- The Retirement Castle administrator's nose is not properly drawn on the scene where Abe meets Bea. Just as they discover they have each others pills, he can be seen as soon as the camera zooms out.
- Once Grampa acquires the fez from Herman's Military Antiques, he is seen wearing it for the remainder of the entire episode.
Music
Goofs
- Although this episode centers largely on Bea's death, at the end of the episode when Abe announces it is time for dinner in the new Beatrice Simmons Memorial Dining Hall and the residents file in, Bea can be seen among them.
- Although in the later episode "The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons", there is an identical woman named Prudence, so it's possible that the "Bea" at the end was Prudence.
- When Kent Brockman is walking past the people outside the Springfield Retirement Home, Mayor Quimby has blonde hair instead of his dark hair.
- Bea's hair is usually gray, but it is blue during the scene when she and Grandpa are dancing.
