James Lipton is an American writer, poet, composer, actor and dean emeritus of Pace University's Actors Studio Drama School in New York City.

Lipton is probably best known for being the host of the cable television talk show Inside the Actors Studio, which has aired on Bravo since 1994. The show's format is that Lipton interviews actors and other people involved with movies and television shows, using an informal and conversational style so that the audience can gain some behind-the-scenes insight into how movies and TV shows are made. Lipton is also the show's writer and executive producer.

On The Simpsons, James Lipton appeared as himself in the episodes "The Sweetest Apu" and "Homer the Father". In both of his appearances, Lipton hosted Inside the Actor's Studio (spelled with an apostrophe), the Simpsons counterpart of his real-life show.
