Synopsis[edit]

Patty and Selma are humiliated when Channel 6 News announces that Springfield has been named the ugliest city in America, and Kent Brockman shows pictures of them to explain how the city earned the designation. Marge tries to console her sisters and they challenge her to walk a mile in their shoes. Marge takes them up on the challenge (getting her hair and wardrobe redone so she looks like Patty and Selma) and is shocked by the difference in how she's treated. Marge then starts a protest movement to stop discrimination against ugly people.

Plot[edit]

Kent Brockman reports that Springfield has been voted the ugliest city in America, and that it is probably caused by the nuclear power plant, and the people look like they escaped from an alien zoo, and he shows pictures of Patty and Selma. The next day, Marge comes to visit her sisters, but they refuse to leave the apartment because the news was so embarrassing. Marge tries to make them realize that they are beautiful, but they say she has always been the beautiful one in their family and she would not survive a mile in their shoes. Marge is angry with them and goes to the hairdresser to get her hair cut so she looks like her sisters and buys the same clothes as them. Marge goes home and wakes Homer, who is sleeping on the couch, but instead of sleeping, he faints when he sees Marge. Bart and Lisa come in and Marge tells them why she has changed her style, but Lisa wonders if it's a good idea. Homer has woken up but cannot look at Marge any longer, and faints again during dinner.

The next day, while Marge is shopping, she notices that she doesn't get the usual, nice treatment that she likes, and she gets a parking ticket from Clancy, who says that he gave it to her because she is not hot anymore. Marge goes to her sisters to tell them that people were unfriendly towards her today, and they tell her that it is their everyday life. Marge then tells them to try to get people to change their perception of appearance. Homer comes home and manages to see Marge the way he usually sees her but fails to have sex with her, even though it's dark in the room. Ruth Powers works with N.A.G.G., an association that fights for a good fight, and when she hears what Marge has done, the association begins to protest against the treatment of ugly people. The protest is a success; more people join it, leading to Mayor Quimby deciding to take down the sign that says "Welcome to Springfield, Ugliest Town in America" with a picture of Marge's sisters.

Patty and Selma come out to see what has happened. Ruth says that they are proof that women don't need to paint their faces and decorate themselges to live a fullfilling life. Patty and Selma are embarrassed. The N.A.G.G. goes to the TV station, the cause of everything, and starts to protest outside of it. Kent comes out and says he wants to make a follow up and let Marge's sisters go on TV and answer questions about their ugliness. They decide to participate in the interview because they feel like heroes after N.A.G.G. has made them realize that other people are ugly. They ask Marge to stop copying their style. Marge goes to the hairdresser, gets her old hairdo back and is happy that everything is back to normal.
