Plot[edit]

Bart's class is visited by Ranger Todd who performs a puppet show about the California Gold Rush. The puppet show goes over when James Marshall first found gold at the Sutter's Mill before other people found out about it and flocked to the location. However, the prospectors ended up going broke and ended up with disease, starvation, exposure, and death. Mrs. Krabappel tells Ranger Todd that she expected a story about the colorful old prospectors they see in movies, but Todd tells her that they weren't colorful. After the show, Nelson pushes Bart's head into the history book, which leads to Bart wanting to get back at Nelson.

Bart takes a bag of fool's gold to the Springfield Lake, where the bullies hang out. Meanwhile, Mr. Burns and Waylon Smithers arrive at the McCoy Farm and decide to bury nuclear waste there illegally. At the Lake, Bart and Milhouse leave the fool's gold around for the bullies, before they are chased off. Bart then runs home, spilling fool's gold as he goes. When the bullies find the gold, they get excited and start telling the town. As the townspeople start finding gold, they begin digging up the town to find more, to Bart's surprise.

Bart decides to just go home and wait for everything to blow over the next day. However, he is woken up by Homer digging up the front yard looking for gold. Bart then finds everyone else in town is still digging everything up looking for gold. When Moe and Barney ask Bart where he got his gold from, Bart tells them that he found it at the McCoy Farm. Everyone heads there to start digging, uncovering all the nuclear waste instead, which Burns and Smithers then find out about.
