Poseidon is the god of the sea in Greek mythology. He is also called "Earth-Shaker", as he is also the god of earthquakes. He appeared in a story from the book Classics for Children.

History[edit]

Zeus became angry with Odysseus when he refused to sacrifice one lamb in gratitude for his victory in the Trojan War. Odysseus then tried to sail home to Ithaca, but Zeus commanded Poseidon to delay his trip so that it ended up taking ten years. Poseidon first appeared in the form of a cloud and blew Odysseus's ship off course so that it ended up at the island of the Sirens. Odysseus and his crew escaped the Sirens, kept sailing, and had nearly reached Ithaca when Poseidon flicked their ship (on the gods' map of the ocean) so that it went all the way back to where it came from and then some, so that the ship wound up at Circe's island, even further away from Ithaca than it had been when it first left Troy. After Poseidon did this, he was seen in Olympus chuckling and saying, "Arrr, ain't I a stinker."[1]

Behind the Laughter[edit]

  • Poseidon is portrayed by Horatio McCallister.
  • When Poseidon says "ain't I a stinker", it is a quote of one of Bugs Bunny's most famous catchphrases.
