Cultural References

  • The title is either a reference to Eazy-E's song, "Boyz-n-the-Hood", or the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood.
  • The gameplay of the arcade game Panamanian Strongman is a reference to King Kong. A man on top of a tower is surrounded by planes who are shooting at him. The man gets hit and falls down.
  • The song "Springfield, Springfield" is adapted from the song "New York, New York" in the 1944 Broadway musical On The Town.
  • The Junior Campers are a parody of the Boy Scouts.
  • When Lisa sees Bart reacting in shock to finding himself wearing a Junior Camper uniform, she teases him by saying "The few, the proud, the geeky." This is a play on "The few, the proud, the Marines", which is a long-standing recruiting slogan of the U.S. Marines.
  • Moe chases Hans Moleman out of the bar with a knife for not using a coaster. Moleman turns and confronts Moe, drawing a large blade from his cane and saying, "That's not a knife, This is a knife!", a reference to Crocodile Dundee.
  • When the raft is adrift at sea and Homer says, "Water, water, everywhere, so let's all have a drink", he is misquoting a famous line from the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the poem, the line reads, "Water, water every where, nor any drop to drink"; it is commonly quoted (with modern phrasing) as "Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink".

Trivia

  • In the opening scene Bart and Milhouse are overheard by security guards saying they have ran out of money. It shows both guards using keys to activate a door. In reality two key systems have to have the keys far enough apart so that a single human cannot activate (usually) the nuclear ICBM
  • Ms. Botz, the Baby-Sitter Bandit and Fat Tony appear on wanted posters in Chief Wiggum's office.
  • Bart, Lisa, and Homer are watching TV when Bart draws on his scouting knowledge to nitpick an Itchy & Scratchy cartoon. Lisa tells Bart that television does not have to be 100% accurate. A second later Homer then walks past the window.
  • On his sash, Bart has badges for: Archery, Debt Collecting, Embalming, TV Trivia, and Patch Forgery.
  • Everyone in the arcade is queued up for the Terminator game.
  • Bart practices his scouting skills by setting a pair of booby traps for Homer:
    • The first trap is a snare trap in the kitchen. Bart puts a slice of pie out on the floor for bait. When Homer walks to the pie to eat it, he is caught by a rope and ends up dangling upside down by one ankle, forced to watch helplessly as Santa's Little Helper eats the pie.
    • The second is a pit trap in the driveway next to where Homer usually parks his car. Homer pulls into the driveway, stops, gets out of his car and falls right into the trap.
  • At the end when Ernest Borgnine and the children are sitting around singing "Bingo", a presence attacks Ernest Borgnine. This is a reference to Jason Voorhees, the horror movie killer from the classic Friday the 13th series who lives at an abandoned camp called Crystal Lake.
  • Despite the Junior Campers which broke off from Flanders and Homer having been attacked by the stalker, one of the junior campers, Adrian is seen in following episodes, meaning that he survived the attack.
  • The abandoned summer camp at the end appears to be what's left of Kamp Krusty.
  • You cannot drink seawater because it contains 3%+ salt. You can however live off water containing 2% or less

Goofs

  • When Bart and Milhouse first go to the Kwik-E-Mart for their Squishee, the two flavors are red and purple. When Apu pours the Squishee, they are both purple. And then when he's done, the two flavors are purple and green. (The Squishee that Apu serves the boys is green.)
  • During the Itchy & Scratchy cartoon ("Aaahhh! Wilderness!"), the pole that Itchy uses to prop Scratchy up into a tent shape disappears when Scratchy is lit by lightning.
  • Despite the "two dads per boat" rule, none of the fathers are seen in the abandoned camp with the rest of the troop.
  • The Krusty Burger map has Mississippi incorrectly labeled as MI. Mississippi's official postal abbreviation is MS; Michigan's is MI.
  • During Bart's vision of what Homer's behavior would be like if he took him on the rafting trip, some of the other troop members/father's speech wasn't lip-synched.
