When Bart's class studied the California Gold Rush, Ranger Todd did a puppet show about Sutter's Mill. The mill's owner was John Sutter, and James Marshall, who worked at the sawmill, discovered gold there. Sutter and Marshall decided to keep the discovery a secret. Word got out anyway, however, and very quickly northern California was overrun by 300,000 people seeking their fortune.
