"The Incredible Lightness of Being a Baby" is the eighteenth episode of broadcast season 31 of The Simpsons and the six-hundred and eightieth episode overall. It originally aired on April 19, 2020. The episode was written by Tom Gammill and Max Pross and directed by Bob Anderson.
Synopsis[edit]
- Marge won't let Maggie play with her new baby crush because of his annoying mother, leading Maggie into a depressive spiral. Meanwhile, Mr. Burns tasks Homer with swindling Cletus out of his helium fortune.
Plot[edit]
Marge takes Maggie on a stroll through the park and, after seeing the poor condition of the first one, brings her to Sand Tropez, where she meets Hudson and his mother, Courtney.
At home, Homer pretends to start a diet by rejecting pancakes in favor of a grapefruit, but once he drives off, he tosses the fruit into the stadium and pulls out a hidden pizza. However, due to the greasy pizza, he crashes into a tree on the way to work and arrives late.
At the crash site, he encounters Cletus and buys some balloons from him. When Homer brings them to work, Mr. Burns delights in the helium and names him Employee of the Month. Burns then visits Cletus's farm to strike a deal but becomes disoriented after drinking moonshine. He decides Homer should be the one to con Cletus out of his helium.
Marge takes Maggie to Hudson's fancy home, but after Courtney's bizarre behavior, she decides not to bring Maggie back. Meanwhile, Homer visits the area where Cletus is collecting helium and bonds with him through fishing and a family lunch, during which Cletus announces that Homer is part of the family.
Homer expresses his moral dilemma to Marge. At home, Maggie finds Hudson's birthday invitation, but Marge explains why she cannot attend, leaving Maggie heartbroken.
Homer brings a contract from Burns for Cletus to sign but stops him at the last moment. When Burns tries to force the deal, the Spuckler family points shotguns at him, compelling Burns to agree to pay a fair price.
In the end, Marge brings Maggie to reunite with the sad Hudson and reconciles with Courtney, while Homer and Cletus sing a best friend song.
Production[edit]
It was scheduled to air on April 7, 2019, but "I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say D'oh" aired instead on that date. The episode was scheduled for Fall 2019, in the next season, but then put on indefinite hold for unreleased reasons.[1][2][3] It later aired on April 19, 2020,[4] when it aired after the short Playdate with Destiny was released, which also featured Maggie's baby crush.[5][6]
