Cultural references[edit]
The Thing and I[edit]
- The segment is based on the 1982 horror film Basket Case.
- Homer sings the opening to the song "Fish Heads" by Barnes & Barnes.
- Dr. Hibbert says that Hugo Simpson is "too crazy for Boys Town". The first Boys Town was founded in 1917 in suburban Omaha as an orphanage for young men and then became a model for public boys homes.
- When Homer says that they will search "every place a sick, twisted, solitary misfit might run to.", Lisa says that she'll check RadioShack.
The Genesis Tub[edit]
- The segment is inspired by The Twilight Zone episode "The Little People". It is also based on Microcosmic God by Theodore Sturgeon.
- The rings of the de-bigulator are a reference to a similar effect used in the 1927 film Metropolis.
Citizen Kang[edit]
- The name of the segment is a reference to the 1941 film Citizen Kane.
- The segment is based around the 1996 United States presidential election, which Bill Clinton and Bob Dole were running in.
Trivia[edit]
The Thing and I[edit]
- Among the items seen in the attic as Bart, Lisa and Maggie investigate the noises are several stacks of unsold copies of Homer's autobiography, Homer, I Hardly Knew Me.
The Genesis Tub[edit]
- Some of the little people resemble Professor Frink, Benjamin, Doug, and Gary.
Citizen Kang[edit]
- We learn that Kodos is Kang's sister.
- The character design for the aide in the Democratic National Committee's van was based on George Stephanopoulos.
Continuity[edit]
The Thing and I[edit]
- Things seen in the attic include:
- The Mary Worth telephone. ("Lady Bouvier's Lover")
- An "I didn't do it" T-shirt. ("Bart Gets Famous")
- A painting of Ringo Starr. ("Brush with Greatness")
- Several boxes of Lisa Lionheart figures. ("Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy")
- A box of The Be Sharps merchandise. ("Homer's Barbershop Quartet")
- The Spinemelter 2000. ("Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?")
- Bart's electric guitar. ("The Otto Show")
Goofs[edit]
The Thing and I[edit]
- When Lisa asks whether she has two brothers the bottom of Lisa's neck is a single line that overlaps her necklace. This is likely a layering error where her neck is meant to be put behind her necklace but was accidentally put in front of it instead.
Citizen Kang[edit]
- In the crowd cheering "Clinton", Apu has a black jacket instead of a green one, while Sanjay has yellow skin and a blue shirt.
- In the same scene, Sanjay's green pants turn blue for a few frames.
- In the shot after that when "Bob Dole" is about to speak, there is an empty space in the crowd between a few people that repeatedly is accidentally colored red.
- The metal lines in the tanks containing the real candidates are in most shots at a height that covers their genitals. However, when the tanks are shown from the back, the metal lines appear significantly lower.
