Moe's Tavern, once known as Moe's Bar is the local tavern in Springfield. The bar is named after its owner, Moe Szyslak. It is the only known tavern in Springfield (maybe because, like Krusty and Krusty Burger, Moe pays Fat Tony money to make sure that there is no competition), though there is a Joe's Tavern in Shelbyville. It is located right next to King Toot's.

Profile
Interior
The bar was described by Dr. Hibbert's daughter as smelling "like tinkle". The inside of the bar is dank and scant with red and green diamond windows. The bar serves Duff Beer, Henry K. Duff's Private Reserve, Tuborg; "The Beer Of Danish Kings", and Red Tick Beer, a beer flavored with dogs. It is also shown that they serve a drink to lose the memory, which Homer uses in order to forget that we was going to have a secret party.
The bar may actually be an illegal speakeasy, as the bar's liquor license expired in 1973, was valid only in Rhode Island and was signed by Moe himself (although Moe had intended to get it updated to the current year, the correct state, and real).

His bar features a few pool tables (to which Barney Gumble once "made sweet love" and then "befouled," in that order), a dartboard, the occasional rat, a love tester machine, a bull-riding machine, a racing washing machine and dryer sold to him by Herb Powell, a cigarette vending machine, and a jukebox. A jar of pickled eggs perpetually sits on the bar counter.

As female customers are so rare, Moe uses the women's restroom as an office. Moe claims that there "haven't been any ladies at Moe's since 1979"

Moe's back room has often been the site of numerous illegal operations. Among these are: smuggling Pandas, Kidnapping Shamu, and running a Deer Hunter-style Russian Roulette game.

It is also shown that there is a back room in the bar which is apparently Moe's bedroom. It's implied in that same scene that Moe lives in the bar, saying "I bet if I didn't sell booze, they wouldn't even come here"

Moe's Tavern always closes on Wednesdays, as Moe performs charity work by reading to the homeless at the same refuge where Ned Flanders serves soup.

Incarnations
Moe's Tavern has been reinvented a few times over the years. During these times, at least, he had many more customers, including women:

Moe's Ice Cream Carnival
Moe said that when he first opened, the tavern was actually "Moe's Ice Cream Carnival", and still, no one was happy there.

Flaming Moe's
Flaming Moe's is the incarnation of Moe's after Moe stole Homer's idea for a drink. The bar was very popular. Celebrities, like Krusty the Clown and Aerosmith, went regularly to the bar. The bar went back to its old self after Homer revealed the secret ingredient, which was cough syrup.

Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag
Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag

Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag is a family restaurant Moe renovated from his tavern. When the Hibberts are on a day out, they stop by Moe's Tavern to get something to eat. Their disappointment with the place together with Julius Hibbert's comment "I thought this was a family restaurant" drives Moe into changing the bar. The restaurant is popular at first with Moe giving away "Million Dollar" Birthday Fries and his guarantee that the food is free if he doesn't smile when the check comes. Marge's first comment to the newly decorated bar is: "An alligator wearing sunglasses? Now I've seen everything." Unfortunately, when Moe, out of irritation of the stresses of running a family restaurant, says bad words in front of the children, the customers leave. The Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag commercial's song is "Come to Uncle Moe's for family fun, it's good good good good, good good good!"

Moe's Pet Shop
Moe's Pet Shop was the incarnation the tavern became when alcohol was outlawed in Springfield. It looked like a normal tavern until Moe pulled a lever, changing it into a pet shop whenever the police came looking.

M
M was another incarnation of Moe's. It was transformed into a bar for younger, more hipper people. Features included a big eyeball looking around, rabbits and an oxygen bar. The bar didn't serve Duff Beer, instead he served a Malaysian beer made entirely of soy sauce. In protest to this new type of bar, Homer created his own garage bar. Moe switched the bar back after he realized the customers were snobs.

The Nag & Weasel
The Nag & Weasel was another incarnation of Moe's. When Homer took a mortgage on his house to save Moe's, Marge partnered up with Moe to revamp the bar as an English pub called The Nag & Weasel. The pub's sign indicated that Marge is the nag and Moe is the weasel.

Mo's
Mo's was another incarnation of Moe's. Mo's started when Waylon Smithers, Jr. wasn't allowed in The League of Extra-Horny Gentlemen and he went into Moe's and notices how slow business is. As Moe serves him a drink, Smithers laments that Springfield needs a bar for the average-looking gay man. Then an idea dawns on Smithers, and he proposes to Moe that they refurbish the bar and make it into a more accepting gay bar. Moe is first reluctant about the idea, because he doesn't feel like being around so many gays, but he soon realizes that with Smithers' plan he can make money. Moe thus decides to turn Moe's into an ultra-trendy gay bar, renaming it to change the name to "Mo's". Smithers revisits the sidewalk in front of The League of Extra-Horny Gentlemen and tells the gays who were denied entrance (among them Grady and Mr. Largo) that they will be welcome in Mo's. Grady and Largo come to Mo's and have a good time, and as word of Mo's spreads in the gay community, Mo's soon becomes a success amongst gays. Mo's went back to its regular self after Moe declared he wasn't gay.

Regular customers
It appears that Moe's tavern has only six regular patrons, Homer, Barney, Lenny, Carl, Sam and Larry. Moe pointed out that due to their frequent habit of drunk-driving, "91% of all traffic accidents in this city are caused by you six guys." In earlier episodes, circa season 5, many other customers are shown at the bar, although most are unnamed characters that play no role but as background.

Barney's bar tab was so large that Moe had to send it to NASA to get it calculated. It totalled to $14 billion. Initially, it was believed to be $70 billion, but that was revealed to be the cost of the Voyager space craft.

Other regulars
You may also occasionally see Charlie, one of Homer's colleagues at the nuclear power plant. Moe's is usually the place where Homer takes new found friends to hang out, such as Principal Skinner before his marriage. Ruth Powers is the only girl regular in the bar and is usually a background character.
The two barflies usually seen are Sam and Larry. Sam always wears a cap and Larry has a balding head.

*A gay man who was under the impression that Moe's Tavern was a gay bar
When Moe insults the name, Shabadoo bursts into tears and runs out of the bar; Barney calls out sympathetically after him, "Hey! Joey Joe Joe!")
*A potential patron was Guy Incognito, a man who looked like Homer and talked in a voice similar to his but had a mustache and wore a top hat and tails. Guy wanted to order a drink one time, but Moe thought it was Homer (Homer was temporarily banned from Moe's at the time) in disguise and kicked him out not realizing his error. Homer sees this man lying in the gutter out the front of Moe's and realizes he looks just like him but instead of investigating this further, Homer chases after a dog with a puffy tail.
*An unknown character who thinks Homer's name is Bill.
*Barney's dog Shaggy was seen joining the regulars. When Moe commented that he was sick of hearing "shaggy dog stories", Shaggy left in a huff.
Performances
A small stage stands at one end and has been host to a few performances
* Aerosmith
* Krusty the Clown (during his "rebel comic" phase)

Location, address and phone number
Moe's Tavern is located on Walnut Street, next to King Toot's Music Store. Across the street is the Moeview Hotel and factory once owned by Bart Simpson.

The phone number varies from time to time. Mr. Burns once tried to call Smithers but did not know his phone number. He tried the buttons marked with the letters for Smithers (764-8437(7)) and called Moe's. Bart is asked to call Homer by Principal Skinner, the number visible on the card is WORK: KLondike 5-6832 HOME: KLondike 5-6754 MOE'S TAVERN: KLondike 5-1239, Moe answers the phone and Bart asks for Homer Sexual. However, in another occasion, Homer phones the bar at 355-1337.

Behind the Laughter
Moe's Tavern is based on a real bar called Moe's by Loyola Marymount in Playa Del Rey, CA on Culver Street. The owner of Moe's actually bears a striking resemblance to the Simpson's Moe.

A bar called Moe's Tavern can be seen opposite the bank in the film Dog Day Afternoon. Hank Azaria stated that Moe's voice was based on that of Al Pacino's character in the same film.

On the Middle East Broadcasting Center on the Arab version of the show, where The Simpsons is known as Al-Shamshoon, the characters drink soda at Moe's Tavern because alcoholic beer is forbidden in Islam.

A DVD featurette on The Complete Tenth Season features a clip collection of these prank calls from Seasons 1 through 7.

In The Simpsons Movie it is called Moe's Bar instead of Moe's Tavern.

The Android's Dungeon and Baseball Card Shop is a comic book shop in Springfield run by Comic Book Guy.

Profile
Owned and run by local resident Comic Book Guy, The Android's Dungeon is Springfield's premiere location to purchase comic books and baseball cards. The store's motto is "Take me to your baseball cards and comics," spoken by a cardboard cutout of a robot on display in the store's window.

The store is a typical comic book store and features several shelves full of new comic book titles such as Manboy, Radiation Dude, Batboy, Mr. Hop, Batchick, Mr. Smarty Pants, Birdguy, Nick, Cat Girl, Power Person, Dog Kid, Iguana Girl, Snake Kid, Lava Lady, Star Dog, The Human Bee, Mister Amazing, Wonder Lady and Tree Man. There also a number of more unique collectables in stock such as a Mary Worth phone (traded to Bart for an Itchy & Scratchy animation cel), a McDonalds Hamburgler kiddie coloring book (sold to Milhouse in exchange for bathroom rights), a rare photo of Sean Connery signed by Roger Moore, Bleeding Gums Murphy's Sax on the Beach album (sold to Bart as a present for his sister Lisa), the ultimate pog with a picture of Steve Allen on it, a child's soul (sold to Milhouse), and a rare Spider-man #1 (purchased and eaten by Homer Simpson).

Some comic books, however, do not sell. Unsold comics typically wind up in the trash in the alley behind the shop. Comic Book Guy often has trouble with nerds picking through his trash, such as the time he threw away a stack of She-Hulk vs. Leon Spinks comics ("Worst crossover ever," CBG said at the time). Some customers are so troublesome that they are banned from the store. Banned customers include Bart Simpson, Milhouse van Houten, Sideshow Bob, and Matt Groening.

When Comic Book Guy had a heart attack, Bart and Milhouse took over running the shop for a brief time and nearly drove it into the ground. Milhouse purchased 2000 copies of a comic entitled Biclops, published by Lenscrafters, about a bespectacled superhero, and the comic sold very poorly. They also held midnight screenings of Comic Book Guy's secret bootleg video archive. Memorable portions of the screening include footage of local newsman Kent Brockman picking his nose and a nuclear disaster strategy film from the Cold War. In contrast to the Biclops comics, the screenings proved to be very popular. Ironically, however, it was not Biclops but the video screenings that resulted in the store nearly being closed, when the Springfield Police got wind of the screenings and raided the store. The Android's Dungeon then became an evidence scene, rather than a place of business, when the police discovered the illegal video stash.

Despite the shabby way that Comic Book Guy treats his customers, people always seem to come back to the store. Stan Lee, creator of Marvel Comics, once visited the store and annoyed Comic Book Guy to no end, possibly teaching him a lesson about how far he can push someone. However, knowing how his mind works, most likely not.

*A drawing of the original Itchy by Chester J. Lampwick.
*A very rare picture of Sean Connery signed by Roger Moore.
Behind the Laughter
In the DVD commentary for "Three Men and a Comic Book," the origin of the store's name is revealed. The show's creators chose the cheesiest name they could think of for a comic book store, and then the name stuck.

742 Evergreen Terrace is the street address of the Simpson family home.

The house to the left of the Simpsons house, 744 Evergreen Terrace is the Flanders's house. The house on the right belongs to Ted Flanders. It was formerly owned by Sideshow Bob, Ruth Powers and Laura Powers, and Sylvia Winfield and Mr. Winfield. Marge once said that Evergreen Terrace is "the street that smells like pee". Oddly, former presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford have moved across the street. Ned Flanders is currently the owner and rents it to The Simpsons.

Profile
Design
The house is a tan-orange two-storey detached house with a garage, basement, attic and lots of mice. On the ground floor, the front door leads straight into the foyer, with one arch in the wall to the left, leading to the sitting room, one to the right which leads into the dining room, a small cupboard and the stairs to the second floor. The sitting room and the dining room both have bay windows. At the back of the house is the living room and the kitchen, with stairs that lead to the basement (Marge discovered a secret sauna room hidden behind a heater). Although rarely seen, there is also a hallway leading to a "Rumpus Room". Homer was seen relaxing in the Rumpus Room several times.

The second storey of the house has Homer and Marge's bedroom (with an ensuite bathroom), Bart's bedroom, Lisa's bedroom, Maggie's bedroom, a bathroom and some 'empty' rooms, often shown in inconsistent places in several occasions. On the landing, there is a hatch which leads to the attic.

The back garden of the house is surrounded by a wooden picket fence and a low box hedge, and features a patio and the treehouse. Occasionally there is a hammock shown tied to two trees near the fence that borders Ned Flanders backyard. Near that fence are the tombstones of The Simpsons' former cats: Snowball I, II, III, and Coltrane.

The burping room is a room in 742 Evergreen Terrace, in which Bart, Lisa and Maggie play in. Once, they had a burping contest, and another time they had a "making faces" contest.

Features and furniture
The basement always includes a washing machine and a clothes dryer and a large Olmec statue of a head, which was a present from Mr. Burns after Bart donated blood to him. However, the appearance of other features such as a furnace, ping-pong table, air hockey set and water softener vary from time to time. The basement is often used as a "secret lair", where Homer has brewed alcohol to beat prohibition and hidden his superhero operation as Pie Man, and where Marge hid during a spell of agoraphobia. Marge discovered a Sauna in the basement, hidden behind a water heater. At one time the basement held gym equipment. In one episode, Homer made his jerky business with Bart in the basement.

The house has two identical red sofas: One in the sitting room which is not seen very often, and a well-known one in front of the TV in the living room - the current sofa is a replacement of the old one which was destroyed (and had a fold-out bed the new one does not have). A tank full of fish is sometimes seen in the dining room, but it only appears several times.

A simple painting of a boat hangs on the wall above the living room couch - Marge once says that she "painted it for Homer", but later it's suggested that she bought it, and it is titled "Scene from Moby Dick". She keeps many copies in a nearby closet to replace the original if it gets damaged, which is rare.
Marge also has a whole drawer of her pearl necklaces (which Marge says are family heirlooms), shown when one is stolen by the Cat Burglar. The house does not have an air conditioner.

Condition
The house itself is often shown as dilapidated; the walls are painted with enough lead paint to double as a bomb shelter, the roof leaks and the kitchen was so badly damaged that it needed to be rebuilt. The interior of the walls are often shown to be filled with dangerous and unusual items such as asbestos, toxic waste, hidden treasure, recording devices, baby dinosaurs and dancing mice. Even the family cat, Snowball II, is seen in between the walls from time to time. However, the lived-in spaces are usually kept neat by homemaker Marge. It was described as a palace by Frank Grimes, and Moe Szyslak observed that it contained no silverfish. The worst condition the house has been in was where it became horrifically slanted, which Bart uses as a sideshow, needing $8500 to repair, which Marge covers by getting a job.

The phone number is inconsistent, though always starting with 555. The area code was 636 before the town became too large and had to use two different area codes, changing the area code to 939.

When Springfield was trapped inside a dome during the Trappuccino crisis, an angry mob converged onto the house as a part of their effort to kill Homer Simpson, who was responsible for the town's ordeal. The house is completely devoured and destroyed with all possessions lost after a sink hole in Maggie's sandpit expands when the Police shot bullets into it (the Simpsons family escaped through the sinkhole). After the dome was destroyed, the townsfolk and the family rebuild the house in exactly the same manner as it was before, restoring the "status quo".

Noncanon
Future
An episode set in 2010 shows a wooden add-on to the second floor, built (rather poorly) by Homer in what appears to be a poor and very cheap attempt to upgrade his house in a fashion similar to all the other homes in the neighbourhood. It functions as a guest bedroom, but Homer warns Lisa and her fiancé that "If the building inspector asks, it's not a room. It's a window box".

Treehouse of Horror
In the Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror VI" episode, there is a portal behind the bookcase in the sitting room that leads to the Third Dimension. This is a reference to The Twilight Zone episode, "Little Girl Lost". In Treehouse of Horror IV, the famous Dogs Playing Poker painting appears above the sofa. A similar house to the Simpson one also appears in the ending of Treehouse of Horror VIII, which Homer egged and broke the windows to get candy only for Lisa to point out that it was their house, making the rest of the trick-or-treaters laugh at the family.

Behind the Laughter
A real life Simpsons house was constructed at 712 Red Bark Lane in Henderson, Nevada, built in 1997 by Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation in a promotion sponsored by FOX and Pepsi. The house was painted and furnished with items to match the television show, although the scale of the house was smaller than the house on the series. The house was given away in a contest; the winner, Barbara Howard, was a retired factory worker from Richmond, Kentucky. The house has since been repainted.

Address
The house's address was inconsistent (particularly in the older seasons of the show), being 94 Evergreen Terrace, 1094 Evergreen Terrace, 723 Evergreen Terrace, and 430 Spalding Way. In the episode, "Homer's Triple Bypass", 742 Evergreen Terrace is shown to be a completely different house where Snake hides from the police and Reverend Lovejoy lives next door. The most common address that is currently used is 742 Evergreen Terrace.

In "Regarding Margie", Bart, Nelson and Milhouse paint the Flanders's house number as 738 and the Simpsons house as '74' and since Homer refuses to pay, they don't paint the last number. By common sense it should be 740 Evergreen Terrace.

Waylon J. Smithers, Jr. (better known as "Mr. Smithers" or simply as "Smithers") is Mr. Burns' personal assistant, executive, and self-proclaimed best friend. In many ways, Mr. Smithers represents the stereotype of the closeted gay man, and numerous overt allusions and double entendres to his homosexuality are made (especially towards Mr. Burns), as he lives in the Gay Neighborhood.

Biography
Waylon Smithers was born in 1954. His father, Waylon Smithers, Sr., worked for Burns until he died of radiation poisoning after saving Springfield from a potential nuclear meltdown, making Mr. Burns the closest thing to a father figure he knew. In high school, he was beaten up by bullies (including Homer Simpson), while he was the announcer for the high school gymnastics competition. Eventually he became Mr. Burns' personal assistant.

As a (not very well) closeted gay man, he has had a crush on Mr. Burns for as long as he as worked for him, but Burns has never caught on. He was previously married to a woman (a southern belle, given her accent and personality), but it fell apart when, shortly after an injury with his leg, and his then-wife wanted to have sex with him, his then-wife referred to his true love, Mr. Burns, as "awful". At one point it was implied that he was linked romantically to John, the owner of Cockamamie's thrift shop. He collects Malibu Stacy dolls, writes a newsletter about the doll, and was the author of a Malibu Stacy stage musical that played in Arizona; he played Stacy's boyfriend. He once owned a Yorkshire Terrier named Hercules. When Mr. Burns convinced Sideshow Bob to run for mayor, it was Smithers who revealed to Bart and Lisa a clue that would lead them to the truth about Bob's not-so-honest victory in the mayoral election, hinting that his reasons were due to Sideshow Bob planning on enacting policies that were oppressive to his orientation.

In 1995, when Mr. Burns attempted to block the sun from Springfield after stealing oil from the elementary school, Smithers objected and was fired. This drove him into a nightmare of alcohol abuse and Comedy Central viewing. He was the main suspect in the subsequent shooting of Mr. Burns, but he was cleared. However, he did, in a drunken stupor, shoot Jasper in his wooden leg while trying to rush home to watch his favorite TV show. No charges were pressed in this case. It is unknown as to what religion he practices, although it is heavily implied that he is Protestant, as he goes to a confessional stand (which is primarily a Catholic practice), and before making the confession, he admits to God that he is not a Catholic, although he did try to march in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade.

Smithers' official job at the power plant appears to be that of executive assistant, which he says is "actually about 2,800 smaller jobs", responsible for monitoring employee attendance and is often a disciplinarian and has won dozens of "Employee of the Month" awards. He has often hinted at wanting to be promoted to the position of executive vice president, but Burns has repeatedly squashed this dream, while whimsically bestowing the vice presidency on Homer and a dog. He was once, however, made the CEO of the Nuclear Power Plant in Burns' stead when Mr. Burns was arrested for stealing paintings from a museum, a position that is arguably better than vice president, although he hints that he didn't want the job. He initially tried to be an employee-friendly boss, but after overhearing a conversation between Lenny, Carl and Homer while meeting at Moe's Tavern that revealed that they were abusing his employee-friendly nature to in essence goof off, he became a worse CEO than Mr. Burns (even going as far as to release wolverines in the house instead of hounds). He eventually gave up on the position willingly after Mr. Burns was released by Lenny, Carl and Homer.

Smithers has the largest collection of Malibu Stacy dolls in the World and is the president of the Malibu Stacy fan club.

Personality
Smithers has been implied to be gay several times despite not declaring it himself. He has several gay friends and frequents Springfield's gay village. When he was arrested for trying to get opium for Mr. Burns, he is implied to be gay when Mr. Burns says to Homer "I've never seen someone taken to a Turkish prison so quickly." and goes on a vacation to a male-only resort. Smithers is shown to be quite passionate for Mr. Burns. Smithers has occasional fantasies about Burns, like dreaming he is on his bed and suddenly Mr. Burns appears flying through the window. When he turns his computer on, it shows a nude Burns saying "Hello Smithers. You're quite good at turning me on" Smithers has declared his love for Burns on some occasions, such as kissing Mr. Burns on the lips after saying "Oh, what the hell!", believing the world was ending, later explaining it to him as "merely a sign of my respect". Another hint of Smithers sexuality is when he seems to have been dating John, a gay man.

Burns has remained largely ignorant of Smithers' devoted adoration. Burns himself has been involved with several women, much to Smithers' frustration, like when Mr. Burns fell in love with Marge and with a woman called Gloria. Smithers was noticeably disgusted when Burns started looking for a female companion. Burns, for his part, views (and refers to) Smithers as a lackey, albeit a highly valued one for his competence and toadying. He has "rewarded" Smithers' devotion with the future "honor" of being buried alive with him after he dies. Smithers has been shown to be somewhat dependant on his relationship with Burns, like the occasion when Burns orders Smithers to take a vacation and Homer is hired as a temporary replacement. When Homer loses his temper and punches Burns in the face, Mr. Burns learns to become self-reliant and this results in Smithers being fired. Smithers decides that he needs to be Burns' assistant and eventually gets his job back. For all his sycophantic devotion to Mr. Burns, Smithers has been willing to challenge him on some occasions. He opposed his employer's various evil schemes Burns fired him. As a result of his firing, Smithers became a "hideous drunken wreck" and when Mr. Burns was shot later, Smithers thought he might have done it while he was drunk. When it was proven that he had not, Smithers seemingly forgave Burns and demanded that the culprit be brought to justice, offering a reward for the capture of the perpetrator.
Future
As seen on Professor Frink's future machine, at age 58, Smithers injects himself with medicine every 10 minutes to become straight (upon taking the injection he waves his arms in the air and shouts "I loves boobies!"). At age 65, he thawed out Mr. Burns and had his 17 stab wounds to the back cured. He attended Lisa Simpson's wedding with him. At age 1,000,050, his head is on a robotic dog body and follows Mr. Burns' head everywhere.

The Simpsons: The Arcade Game
Smithers appears in this game as the first boss of the final level, as well as one of the main antagonists. Smithers, presumably under Mr. Burns' command, broke into a jewelry store to steal a diamond. As he and his fellow henchmen were making their escape, he (quite literally) bumped into the Simpson's family, causing him to lose the diamond, and for Maggie to catch it. Because of this setback, Smithers ends up kidnapping Maggie and, after a few misadventures, Smithers makes it back to the Nuclear Power Plant, although not without the Simpsons family following him. He then fights the Simpsons family, remarking "Welcome to my world!" He lobbed several explosives at the family. When sensing that he would soon lose, he opened his cape, revealed to be filled with explosives, cackling maniacally only to react in shock as he discovers that the explosives had activated, causing him to be caught in the explosions. For unknown reasons, Smithers in this game actually sounds much higher pitched than in the regular series (most of the other characters usually have more or less the same voices in the game).

The Simpsons Game
In The Simpsons Game, level "Lisa the Tree Hugger", Smithers was involved in Mr. Burns' plan of trying to cut down the entirety of Springfield Forest, and is comforting him about doing better next time when the plan fails due to Lisa and Bart's interference, as well as phoning some goons to beat up Al Gore. In Mob Rules, he appears as one of the people Marge can use to protest the sales of the Grand Theft Scratchy videogame to minors. In Medal of Homer, a squad of sailors resembling Smithers protects Private Burns on board his personal naval carrier where he protects the stolen paintings from the village of St. Capitulons. According to Abraham Simpson during the briefing for the level, the sailors in question fight neither for country nor for God, solely for love.
Coca Cola Advert
He is briefly seen being bought by Patty and Selma, then in the park butlering them.
Smithers's relationship with Mr. Burns has long been a running joke on The Simpsons. Smithers is an obedient and sycophant assistant to Mr. Burns. There have often been strong hints about Smithers's true feelings for his boss, with one of the earliest references being in the season one episode "The Telltale Head". Smithers's sexual orientation has often come into question, with some fans claiming he is a "Burns-sexual" and only attracted to his boss, while others maintain that he is, without a doubt, gay. During the Bill Oakley/Josh Weinstein era, they still tried to keep his sexuality mysterious and there was debate among the writers about his orientation. Al Jean, who thinks of Smithers as being a "Burns-sexual", felt that had Mr. Burns been a woman, then Smithers would not be gay. David Silverman, a former supervising director has said, "[Smithers] seems to be focused on one particular human, as opposed to anything beyond that. [Rather than being gay], he's sort of 'Burns-sexual.'" "Waylon Smithers" is actually an anagram of "Wants him sorely". In a 2006 study conducted by the "Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation", it was determined that nine of the 679 lead and supporting characters on scripted broadcast television were gay or lesbian. Smithers was not included among these nine characters, and it caused a mild online controversy. Patty Bouvier, Marge Simpson's lesbian sister, was included on the list. The debate is referenced in "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular", when the episode host, Troy McClure is answering viewer questions, and one that is asked is "What is the real deal with Mr. Burns' assistant Smithers? You know what I'm talking about." A montage of various clips that shows Smithers' lust for Mr. Burns follows, and in the end, McClure says "as you can see, the real deal with Waylon Smithers is that he's Mr. Burns' assistant. He's in his early forties, is unmarried, and currently resides in Springfield. Thanks for asking!"

Several of the allusions to Smithers's sexuality have turned into battles with the censors. For example, in Smithers' fantasy of a naked Mr. Burns popping out of a birthday cake in "Rosebud", the censors had not wanted Mr. Burns to be naked. Another example is "Marge Gets a Job", which has a dream sequence where Smithers is sleeping and Burns flies through a window. The sequence shows Burns flying towards him and Smithers looking happy, but originally it went on for a few seconds longer. It had to be trimmed down due to scenes that showed "Mr. Burns land[ing] on a particular position on Smithers's anatomy". There were also issues with "the lump in his bed", which the animators had been drawn as his knee, but the censors had misinterpreted.

In the early seasons, Smithers has an occasional catchphrase, which comes from a recurring joke that Mr. Burns never remembers who Homer is. In some scenes, Smithers and Burns would watch Homer over a security camera Burns will ask, "Who is that man?", to which Smithers would reply, "That's Homer Simpson sir, one of your [insert drones, organ banks, carbon blobs, etc.] from sector 7G."

Reception
In the second season, the writers started to enjoy writing about Smithers and Burns's relationship, and the writers often pitched episodes with them as the focus, but many never came to fruition.

In 2004, Simpsons producers announced that one of the characters was going to come out of the closet. Speculation on who it would be was printed in newspapers throughout the United States and Canada (even claiming Smithers's "sexual orientation was about the worst-kept secret in Springfield,") They have also described Smithers and Mr. Burns as being "TV's most functional dysfunctional couple". Star News Online named "Smithers' fey way" as one of the four hundred reasons why they loved The Simpsons. In a 2003 article, Entertainment Weekly named the [[Who Shot Mr. Burns? == Cultural influence ==
Smithers was made into an action figure, and four different versions were included as part of the World of Springfield toy line. The first shows Smithers in his normal attire with a picture of Mr. Burns at his feet and was released in 2000 as part of "wave two". The second, released in 2002 as part of "wave ten", is called "resort Smithers" and shows him dressed as he was at the resort in the episode "Homer the Smithers". In 2003, a series of figures exclusive to Electronics Boutique was released, and a set of one Mr. Burns figure and two different Smithers toys based on the episode "Rosebud" were included. One, called "Bobo Smithers" shows Smithers dressed as Mr. Burns' teddy bear Bobo; and the other, known as "future Smithers", shows him as a robotic dog. A "future Burns" was included in the set as a companion to "future Smithers" and depicts Burns as how he appeared as a robot at the end of the episode.
