Voice actress
After Grau's death in 1995, Lunchlady Doris was retired out of respect for over 10 years. Due to the delay between recording some episodes and the time they actually air, Grau's voice was included in episodes airing as late as 1997 such as "Lisa's Sax". Lunchlady Doris then became a silent background character and was mostly been seen in crowds and groups of other faculty members. In the 18th season, she returned as a speaking character beginning with "The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer", where she is voiced by Tress MacNeille.

He has been behind several of Springfield's criminal enterprises. His rackets include illegal gambling, cigarette smuggling, and bootlegging. He has also been seen bribing and making secret deals with Mayor Quimby.

Fat Tony has a son named Michael, who he drives to school. He is a widower and refers to his wife's death as; "She was whacked, by natural causes." Fat Tony and his associates meet in what is known as the Legitimate Businessman's Social Club.

Fat Tony died of a heart attack after Homer betrayed him while working undercover for the FBI.

Biography
An Italian-American mobster in his early forties, "Fat Tony" is the head of the D'Amico Crime Family, the prime family in the Springfield Mafia. His fellow mobsters include Joey, Legs and Louie, and occasionally Johnny Tightlips. Tony's schemes have ranged from supplying rat's milk to the school cafeteria to dabbling in the illegal fireworks racket. His gang also attempts to monopolize various legitimate business. Fat Tony is also a very competent violinist. Fat Tony lives in his mansion, which strongly resembles that of Tony Montana from the movie Scarface, in the upscale residential area of "Springfield Heights", which is also resided by the Jewish entertainer Krusty The Clown and actor Troy McClure. D'Amico has owned several cars such as a black Lincoln Navigator, white Dodge Caravan and an Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8B.

"Business" dealings
Fat Tony has been behind most, if not all of, Springfield's criminal enterprises. He and his associates meet in what is known as the "Legitimate Businessmen's Social Club." Tony's rackets include the usual organized crime activities such as illegal gambling, cigarette trafficking, and rum running, but he will sometimes branch out into more unusual activities.

Homer once entered a deal with the Springfield Mafia to help Marge's pretzel franchise by driving out rival snack food distributors. Fat Tony demanded 100% of the profits from the business in exchange, only to be stopped by the local Yakuza (brought in by Marge's rivals). The two gangs then started a mob war (which continued off-screen), with Fat Tony and his gangsters displaying very impressive fighting skills, rather than just pulling out their guns as usual. Krusty the Clown pays the Mafia to keep McDonald's and Burger King out of Springfield, so that Krusty Burger can have a monopoly.

He made a product called Squeaky Farms Brand Genuine Animal Milk.

Much of Springfield's municipal government is involved with the Mafia. Chief Wiggum has been seen taking bribes from Fat Tony (although at the same time Chief Wiggum also tries to hunt him down even going as far as to compare Tony as being a cancer to Springfield, and tries to compare himself to the cure for cancer), and Mayor Quimby is more often than not in on the bribing procedures. Once, Fat Tony bribed Mayor Quimby to allow him to deliver counterfeit milk to the schools, and left Quimby under the impression that he intended to use dog's milk or higher. After his bodyguard, Homer Simpson, stumbled upon the milking facility and blurted out that they're actually milking rats, Quimby was outraged. In retaliation for a raid on their rat milk facility, Fat Tony attempted to take out a hit on Mayor Quimby. Tony once put out a contract on Homer after his private security business interfered with the mob's interests. Homer would have been executed gangland-style if not for Maggie coming to the rescue with her rifle. Marge usually has a more peaceful relationship with Fat Tony, even driving his son Michael home from school. She mentions that the Mafia frequently congregates outside her house, and that she often brings them lemonade.

Family
Fat Tony is a widower; he had a wife who was "whacked by natural causes." Tony has a son named Michael, whom he planned to have follow in his footsteps as the leader of the Springfield Mob.

Death
After he found out that his new "family member" Nicky was a spy, he suffered a heart attack and died. His cousin Fit Tony, who later became known as Fat Tony, took over from him.

Behind the Laughter
Originally, Tony was going to be voiced by Hank Azaria. However, since Fat Tony wasn't a very good drawing, Matt Groening decided to make a Special Guest Voice do him. Groening chose Joe Mantegna. In one DVD commentary it is stated that Mr. Mantegna is so enamored with the character that he has forbidden to allow anyone else to voice Fat Tony; he even voiced him when the script only called for a couple of grunts ("Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes"). However, this didn't stop Phil Hartman filling in for him on one occasion ("A Fish Called Selma").

Inspiration
Fat Tony is a pastiche of Mafia characters from movies and dramas, especially The Godfather franchise (and in later seasons The Sopranos). His nickname may be a reference to "Black Tony", the Don of the fictional Stracci family in The Godfather. After 1999 Fat Tony is clearly based on Tony Sopranos of The Sopranos. In several episodes the Sopranos intro theme ('Woke Up This Morning' by Alabama 3) is played in scenes with Fat Tony.

"Moe Baby Blues" featured several interesting references relating to Fat Tony. To entertain his subordinates, Fat Tony puts an orange slice in his mouth in imitation of Vito Corleone from The Godfather. Minutes later, Fat Tony responds to an emotional scene by saying "I haven't cried this much since I paid to see Godfather III" (in which Mantegna played the character Joey Zasa, one of the inspirations for Fat Tony). His son's name is a reference to Michael Corleone.

On several occasions Fat Tony's has said something that begins as ominous gang language, only to be proven innocent; one example is "We are going for a ride... By which I mean the carpool" and "Now who's ready to sleep with da fishes?... Because I brought this Finding Nemo comforter!" This also led to some confusion among his fellow mafia members, such as the time when Troy McClure was involved in a scandal involving a sexual attraction to fishes, and he told his fellow gang members that he was "sleeping with the fishes", causing them to misinterpret the meaning to Troy having died when he was actually meaning that McClure was literally sleeping with the fishes. His house also strongly resembles that of Tony Montana in the movie Scarface.

Fat Tony also bears similiarities to notorious mobster Al Capone.

Trivia
Fat Tony being a competent violinist is a reference to the Thompson sub-machine gun (Tommy) which was the mafia's weapon of choice and was nicknamed the "Chicago Violin".

Momar' "Moe" Szyslak, also known as Morris Szyslak, is the proprietor and bartender of "Moe's Tavern", a Springfield bar frequented visited by Homer Simpson, Barney Gumble, Lenny Leonard, Carl Carlson, Sam, Larry and others.

Biography
Moe was born on November 24. Moe either illegally immigrated to the United States from Holland or was born in Indiana. He used to have an Italian accent but no longer uses it, hinting at Italian heritage. At some point in his life, Moe ended up on Mt. Everest where he was brought up by his father, a yeti. When Mr. Burns bought the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant and came into Springfield riding an elephant, Moe asked to touch the elephant. The elephant then steps on Moe, giving him his bad looks. As a child, he played the part of "Smelly", a tough kid, on The Little Rascals until he killed Alfalfa (or rather, an orphan portraying as him) in a fit of rage for stealing his bit and was fired. His first kiss was at 10 with Comic Book Guy. At some unspecified time during his childhood, his parents dropped him off at summer camp, never to return and pick him up, leaving the Summer camp: Camp See-a-Tree, as being the closest that he could call a home. Moe becomes a victim of prank calls when young Marge calls the boys' camp and young Moe answers it. Marge asks to talk to Elvis Jagger Abdul-Jabbar, which is what young Homer introduced himself as to her. Moe, thinking that she is trying to trick him, becomes angry and hangs up. Then he turns and says, "And, uh, that's the origin of that". Moe has stolen many things but a more remembered item is the bag of Aztec coins in which created the criminal snake (metaphorically speaking). As a young man, Moe became a professional boxer, going by the names "Kid Gorgeous", "Kid Presentable", "Kid Gruesome", and "Kid Moe". Moe blames his boxing career for making him ugly. According to Moe, his boxing career ended because of politics, and because he was knocked out 40 times in a row. Moe's ugliness caused him to audition unsuccessfully for a part in the soap opera "It Never Ends". However in later years Moe has plastic surgery which earned him the role of Dr. Tad Winslow. His current appearance has been described as consisting of "cauliflower ear, lizard lips, little rat eyes, caveman brow and fish snout". After attending bartending school at Swigmore University, Moe opened up his own drinking establishment, "Moe's Tavern". Moe could have started a cult, as Bart once told Kearney "he's in that cult Moe started". He is currently banned from California. He is also a natural at judging but after fighting with Simon Cowell he is no longer allowed to judge. In a previous episode he said he does many things but judging isn't one of them. During Trappuccino he claimed he was the emperor of Springfield.

Personality
Moe is the owner and, except for a few instances where temporary help is hired, the only employee of Moe's Tavern. His most loyal customer is Barney Gumble, with other regulars including Homer Simpson, Lenny Leonard, Carl Carlson, Sam and Larry. Moe is notoriously cheap with his customers, refusing to give them free drinks, or throwing them out when they are out of money (and in one case, he asks who are the designated drivers, then tells them to beat it, claiming to have "no time for cheapskates" on St. Patrick's Day). He also wants his customers to drink as much as possible, as then their tab will grow larger. Barney's tab had to be sent to Nasa to be calculated and it came out to be $14 billion. Once, when Homer asked Moe where the dart board was, Moe said, "we're phasing out the games, people drink less when they're having fun."

Moe generally serves Duff beer on tap, having little knowledge of liquors or wines; the liquor bottles visible behind the bar are said to be "painted on," and in one instance, he unknowingly sells an 1888 bottle of Château Latour for a few dollars. In one case, he wonders if gin and tonic mix. He enthusiastically abandons his bar, its regular customers, and his friends when a better opportunity comes along, such as the drink "The Flaming Moe", the opening of his postmodern bar "M", and the conversion of his bar into a family-themed restaurant called "Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag". Moe is often engaged in shady or illegal activities at his tavern, including smuggling pandas and orca's, hosting Russian roulette games, operating an unlicensed casino, serving liquor without a license (his expired in 1973 and it's only good in Rhode Island as well as being signed by Moe himself), running a speakeasy during Springfield's brief flirtation with Prohibition, and performing unlicensed surgery in his bar. Moe and his bar has gained popularity many times; however, the fad mainly ends. Very few times Moe's popularity stays and his money sky rockets.

Moe's temperament is characterized by a short, violent temper (particularly aiming a makeshift shotgun at customers), coupled with homicidal and suicidal tendencies and a proclivity towards obsessive behaviors. These traits are exhibited in his behavior, including frequently attempting suicide (including an annual attempt on Christmas and calling the suicide hotline after his bar was closed by the health department), keeping an enemies list nearly identical to that of Richard Nixon (He added in Barney's name to the list after Barney called him out on his using Richard Nixon's list as his own), assuming a leading role in many of Springfield's angry mobs (including, at times, starting mob riots, even ones directed at him, solely for the sake of a mob riot), and kidnapping Talking Heads vocalist David Byrne. He has also used his b-boy skills for self-defence, shot at Carl, robbed Homer of expensive pants, kept Hans Moleman under his bar's floorboards in a subterranean torture chamber, perpetrated insurance fraud, and stalking various townspeople. This behavior is further exhibited when he becomes the self-proclaimed Emperor of Springfield when the town is trapped in a dome. His leadership is challenged by Barney who throws a Molotov Cocktail at him, which Moe successfully throws back. He once implies that he probably wouldn't continue to be suicidal if Reverend Lovejoy had told him that he had much to live for. He also tries to attempt suicide by sky diving without a parachute but he ends up landing on a Hot Air Balloon which happens to be one Homer and Marge are flying in and after he lands he says to himself "I can't believe this happened to me twice". Another of Moe's suicide attempts is when he is laying down at the beach by the tide and says "Come on tide take me with you, I just don't want to feel anymore pain", and the tide comes up to him and a stingray ends up on his face smacking him with his tail.

Moe has a strained love life due to his vulgarity towards women and his ugly appearance. Despite this, Moe has had a number of romantic experiences, including sleeping with his bartender Colette, dating a woman named Renee, and enjoying the company of many women after he had plastic surgery to correct his ugly appearance. He has long been infatuated with Marge Simpson (whom he often refers to as Midge) and has on occasion professed his love for her and tried to win her away from Homer. Moe's romantic attractions have resulted in criminal behavior and run-ins with the law; he has stalked Maude Flanders and other townspeople, he must register as a sex offender, and he had a restraining order placed upon him. At one point he is seen on his way to a "V.D. clinic". Moe has also proposed marriage to a WNBA mascot, even knowing that the character inside the mascot is Gil Gunderson.

Despite his faults, Moe has been shown to express genuine love and sentimentality, which suggests that he may not be as gruff as he appears. He has a cat named Mr. Snookums, of whom he is very fond. Moe is also kind towards the rats that live in his bar. On Wednesday nights, he reads to the homeless in a local soup kitchen and he also reads to sick children at the hospital. Until it was destroyed, Moe had a fondness for a jar of pickled eggs. He saved the owner of King Toot's music store and his wife from a flaming car. He saved the life of Maggie Simpson (ironically at a time that he was about to commit suicide by jumping off of a highway bridge into the river) and took efforts to protect her. Moe engaged in charity work in South America or Africa, using a flying fan to fight forest fires and deliver medical supplies to people devastated by floods. Moe has knowledge of automobiles and dancing.

Moe has also been revealed to be good at writing poetry, with help from Lisa who arranged his poems for him. However, Moe's inner beauty was ruined when he refused to share credit with Lisa for his poem Howling at a Concrete Moon in fear that he would get rejected by his fellow authors.

When Moe noticed that Homer, Apu and Timothy Lovejoy, Jr. had relationship problems with their wives, Moe wrote a letter to the three men and had it delivered to them when they're on a boat to Weasel Island, stating that he is leaving Springfield permanently with one of the men's wives. While they determined whose wife Moe supposedly left with (and realizing the problems with their spouses), Moe went around Springfield solving all the men's marriage problems. He later confronted the three men, explaining to them why he wrote the letter and told them not to take their wives for granted. He is also rumored to have rescued the Springfield Elementary Model U.N. Club that was stranded on an island. Exactly how is unknown.

The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase
In the "The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase", Moe has his own spin-off, "The Love-Matic Grampa", in which Abraham Simpson dies and his spirit falls into the Love-Matic tester machine of Moe, and he gives advices to Moe so he can get a date with a woman called Betty. They both go out on a date, and Moe goes to the bathroom each time to see Grampa, until Betty discovers everything, but still loves Moe because he bothered to do all this just for her.

Video-games
The Simpsons Road Rage
In the video game "The Simpsons Road Rage", Moe is a character that you can unlock later in the game and drive him. In the brief video when you select his car you can see that he is smuggling a panda, which can be seen in an episode. You can also pick him up as a passenger while driving as another character. In The Simpsons Road Rage and The Simpsons Hit & Run video games he says "Newsflash; you suck!"

The Simpsons Game
In the "The Simpsons Game", he is Homer's coach in the level Around the World in 80 Bites, and when he wins, Homer bites off Moe's hand by an accident. He is one of the people Marge can use in Mob Rules to protest the sales of the Grand Theft Scratchy videogame to minors. In the level NeverQuest, he is an enemy, and looks like an Orc.

Behind the Laughter
Moe's character was based partly on Tube Bar owner Louis "Red" Deutsch, who was made famous in the popular Tube Bar prank calls when he was repeatedly prank called by two Jersey City residents. These calls were the inspiration for Bart's repeated prank calls to Moe, and Deutch's often profane responses made Moe's violent side. Moe's further inspiration was drawn from comedian Rich Hall, an acquaintance of The Simpsons writer George Meyer. Hall considered being the basis for Moe "an honour". Moe's surname "Szyslak" was revealed in "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part One)", the writers found the name in a phonebook and gave it to Moe so that he would have the initials M.S., and hence could be a suspect in the Burns shooting. He was designed by Dan Haskett.

Moe was the first voice Hank Azaria performed for the show, redubbing Christopher Collins who initially recorded the character's voice for "Some Enchanted Evening". At the time of his audition, Azaria was doing a play in which he had the part of a drug dealer, basing his voice on Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon. He used the same voice in the audition, and was told by Matt Groening and Sam Simon to make it more gravelly, with it becoming the voice of Moe. Groening and Simon thought it was perfect and took Azaria over to the Fox recording studio. Before he had even seen a script, he recorded several lines of dialogue as Moe for the episode "Some Enchanted Evening". Also in earlier seasons he was seen with black hair instead of his current gray hair. After the episode "When Flanders Failed" where Ned Flanders opened the Leftorium, it is revealed that Moe is Left Handed. During the episode "Bart-Mangled Banner" moe claims to be Dutch, only to stomp out of his bar wearing clogs a few seconds later.

Real name
In "Flaming Moe's", his hired waitress Colette calls him "Morris". Yet, in "The Springfield Connection", Homer discretely hints that Moe's official name is "Momar" and Moe cringes with humiliation. It can be suggested that Momar is his real name and he just simply told Colette to call him Morris because it could easily be that instead. It is implied in "Eeny Teeny Maya, Moe" that he changed his name to Moe so he could keep the sign and the bar's name.

Van Houten family

2013-08-27T03:12:25Z

Evan:

The Van Houtens are a family native to Springfield consisting of Kirk, Luann, and Milhouse. All three look alike: cobalt blue hair, red coke-bottle glasses, and giant, softball-sized noses, similar to earlier characters Akbar and Jeff from Matt Groening's Life in Hell comic strip. They are some of the few characters with eyebrows. Kirk and Luann got a divorce in the same episode, but remarried in "Little Orphan Millie".

The grandparents introduced in the show have the same physical characteristics as Milhouse and his parents, making it more unclear just whose parents (Kirk's or Luann's) they are. They consist of:

Mona J. Simpson (née Olsen), also known as Penelope Olsen, Martha Stewart, Muddy Mae Suggins, Anita Bonghit, and Mona Stevens, was the mother of Homer Simpson, estranged wife of Abraham Simpson, mother-in-law of Marge Simpson and grandmother of Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

Biography
Early life
Sometime before or during the 1960s, Mona married Abraham (Abe) Simpson, later giving birth to a son, Homer. Before Homer's birth, she had cheated on Abe with a lifeguard, when a love letter was discovered in the hands of a mailman after being frozen. The letter stated that "in his heart he'll know that the baby she carries is his". When Homer discovers the letter in his late thirties/forties, he questions who his father is, although it is later discovered that Abe's DNA was a perfect match for Homer. At some point before Homer's birth, she also found out about Abe Simpson fathering a child with a carnival prostitute before he married her, and shortly after Homer was born, made him promise that he never tell Homer about the incident at the carnival, as she wanted Homer to grow up to respect his father.

During the 1960s, whilst Homer was a small child, she became increasingly involved in a hippie movement and political activism. She cited Joe Namath's long hair during Super Bowl III as igniting her beliefs. She took Homer and Abe to the Woodstock Festival, where Homer ended up being influenced by the hippies. She and other activists, protesting germ research, entered a facility owned by Charles Montgomery Burns, destroying all the biological warfare experiments and in the process curing Clancy Wiggum of asthma. Whilst escaping, she stopped to tend to a fallen Burns, who threatened her with arrest.

A couple of weeks before Mona left, Homer and Abe went out fishing and the boat capsized. Homer and Abe later arrived back at the holiday home a few hours late and with no fish. Mona was just relieved that her greatest treasure, Homer, was safe. It was because of this incident, Homer thought that he was the reason that Abe and Mona split up and felt guilty about it ever since.

She eventually left her husband and son, with Abe later telling Homer that she had died whilst he was at the movies. Abe even went so far to point out a grave, telling Homer it was Mona's, although the grave belonged to Walt Whitman.

After leaving Springfield, her exact movements are unknown, although it is later revealed she resided at the hippie commune Groovy Grove Natural Farm for several years, painting murals of Homer. She sent Homer care packages each week, although Homer was unaware of this, because of his refusal to tip his letter carrier, with Homer collecting the packages years later. During this time, she also cheated on Abe, having a menage a trois relationship at Groovy Grove with Seth and Munchie, who later fondly remembered her as a "pretty groovy chick" and "a demon in the sack". Abe, in the meantime, remained unaware of her whereabouts.

Return to Springfield
When Homer faked his death to avoid work, Mona hears of her son's death on the news and visits her son's still open grave, finding Homer in the grave, who accidentally fell in. She returns to the Simpson house, spending time with Homer and her new family, including Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie. She also meets Abe, although their dislike only intensifies as Abe remains angry over her leaving him and Homer, whilst Mona becomes angry after learning he had told Homer she was dead. When Homer and Mona go to the post office, to collect years worth of care packages, she is spotted and recognized by Burns. Mona is forced once again to leave Springfield, on the run from the police, although the now police chief, Clancy Wiggum, aides her escape after being cured of asthma because of Mona in the 1960s.

Second return to Springfield
Sometime later, Homer discovers a hidden message in a newspaper, left by his mother. She is discovered by the police at a diner and is arrested, later put on trial. She is acquitted because of evidence given by Homer, although she is later imprisoned, thanks to Mr. Burns, for signing into a federal park under a false name. Homer attempts to break his mother out of prison on a prison bus, with a police chase ensuing. The chase ends when she apparently dies, after the bus drives off a cliff and into some water, where it explodes, which sets off a rock avalanche, burying the bus. Mona, however, narrowly escapes the bus before it went off the cliff. She again goes on the run, where she sends another hidden message in a newspaper to Homer, written whilst eating a Rhode Island-style clam chowder.

Final return and death
Mona returns to Springfield again, visiting Homer. The two fight and Homer decides not to speak to her. Shortly before midnight, feeling guilty, he attempts to apologize to his mother. Finding her sitting on an armchair, he apologizes, before realizing his mother is dead. Her death devastates Homer. She is cremated and, sometime after her cremation, the Simpson family watches her recorded will. She leaves Bart her army knife, Lisa her rebellious spirit (although Lisa takes her earrings) and Marge an old purse made of hemp, asking Homer to release her ashes from the top of Springfield Monument Park at 3:00 PM. Homer completes his mother's wish, releasing the ashes, which are sucked into a missile launch computer within the mountain, owned by Mr. Burns. The ashes stop the missile from launching, preventing the nuclear power plant's waste being blasted to the Amazon rain forest. Homer is captured, but manages to escape, with help from Marge, Bart and Lisa, destroying the base and fulfilling his mother's final wish.

Homer's bed wetting
Sometime after Mona's death, Homer started wetting the bed. This was triggered by a fishing trip he and Bart went on, similar to one his father and he went on years ago. The whole family enters Homer's dreams to get to the bottom of Homer's bed wetting and meet Mona Simpson there, who's still alive in Homer's thoughts and dreams. She first saved them, dressed as Death, and then showed Homer the memory of him and Abe going fishing and returning. She then explained to Homer that the reason he started wetting the bed again was because he was still feeling guilty as he thought that the fishing trip gone bad was the reason that Mona left him and Abe. She reassured him that this was not the case and that Homer was her greatest treasure, and that she, his father and his younger self would always be in his memories. She then tells them to leave the dreams and to wake up, with Homer saying good bye to his mother one last time.

Behind the Laughter
Creation
Prior to the seventh season, Mona Simpson had only made two brief flashback appearances, the first being Season 2's "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", appearing again in the sixth season episode "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy". In both episodes she was voiced by Maggie Roswell.

Mona's first major appearance was in the seventh season episode "Mother Simpson", which was pitched by Richard Appel, who was desperately trying to think of a story idea and decided that he had to really reach for an idea and decided to do something about Homer's mother, who previously had only been mentioned once. The writers used the episode as an opportunity to solve several little puzzles, such as where Lisa's intelligence came from.

The character is named after Richard Appel's wife at the time, whose maiden name is Mona Simpson. Mona Simpson was designed in a way so that she has little bit of Homer in her face, such as the shape of her upper lip and her nose. There were several design changes because the directors were trying to make her an attractive older and younger woman, but still be Simpson-esque. The inspiration for the character comes from Bernardine Dohrn of the Weather Underground, although the writers acknowledge that several people fit her description. Her crime was intentionally the least violent crime the writers could think of, as she did not harm anyone and was only caught because she came back to help Mr. Burns.

Glenn Close, who was directed in her first performance by Josh Weinstein, was convinced to do the episode partially because of [[James L. Mona was originally voiced by Maggie Roswell, before Glenn Close took over in the episodes "Mother Simpson", "My Mother the Carjacker" and "Mona Leaves-a". Tress MacNeille voiced her flashback appearance in the episode "D'oh-in' in the Wind". Pamela Hayden has also voiced Mona, due to Glen Close's inability to say 'd'oh'.

Development
Glenn Close would record original material for another episode, season fifteen's "My Mother the Carjacker", and a deleted scene featuring Mona from "Mother Simpson" would appear in season seven's "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular". Mona also had a speaking appearance in season ten's "D'oh-in' in the Wind" episode, this time voiced by Tress MacNeille. Glenn Close returned as Mona for the third time in the nineteenth season episode "Mona Leaves-a".

Reception
"Mother Simpson" is one of Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein's favourite episodes, as they feel it is a perfect combination of real emotion, good jokes and an interesting story and they have expressed regret about not submitting it for the Emmy Award in the "Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming less than One Hour)" category.

Herbert "Herb" Powell is the older half-brother of Homer Simpson.

Biography
The product of a short-lived affair between Homer's father, Abraham Simpson, and a female carnival worker, Herb was adopted by Edward Powell and Mililani Osler. He put himself through Harvard by working odd jobs because his adoptive parents refused to pay for his admission (or may not have been able to afford his college tuition). He then founded Powell Motors, a car company based in Detroit. Herb was overjoyed to learn that he had a birth family and bonded with his nieces and nephew, and - in his role as CEO - allowed Homer to design a car. However, Homer's car was a failure and it bankrupted the company. Herb ended up becoming a street vagrant. He prefers to be called "Unky Herb" by his nieces and nephew, because he thinks the term "uncle" is too formal. His birthday is also on July 16, 1954.Fact

He briefly settled in the Simpson household, despite his intense continuing antipathy toward Homer. Homer loaned Herb $2000 (from the power plant, as compensation for making him sterile from radiation), which Herb used to build an invention that translated infantile speech into comprehensible English, based on observations he made of Maggie Simpson. He proceeded to mass-produce his new product and regained his fortune. He then proceeded to pay back the Simpson family the $2,000, but also bought Homer a vibrating chair, Marge a new washer and dryer set, Bart a life membership in the National Rifle Association, Lisa a monthly set of classic novels, and a promise that he will buy something nice for Maggie. (It is also believed Herb did something for the Flanders family to show his gratitude to them for giving him a suit and not making look like a bum anymore). Most of all, Herb ends his antipathy towards Homer and is happy to call him his brother once again.

Herb exhibits a drive uncommon for anyone with Simpson blood in his veins, and given that he started his own automobile company and later invented a baby translator it can be assumed that he is also remarkably intelligent for a member of the Simpson family.

Herb has not been seen since then, although he appeared in a picture when Homer listed off family members who needed to lose weight. Homer calls him "my seldom seen half-brother Herb". He considers wealth in terms of love and family, not money. He is the only Simpson male that doesn't have the "Simpson Gene".

Family
Original parents
Herb's biological parents are Abraham Simpson and an unnamed woman. Abe first met the attractive female prostitute at a traveling carnival, where they were taken with each other. One year later, Abe saw the same woman again at the carnival to find out he had fathered an illegitimate son (Herb) with her. Unmarried and ashamed, Abe and the woman took their infant son to the Shelbyville Orphanage, where he was later adopted by the Powell family. A year later, Abe married Mona and Abe told Mona about what happened at the carnival. When Homer was born, Mona told Abe to never tell Homer about the out-of-wedlock birth. Later, however, Abe had a mild heart attack and decided he needed to tell Homer about Herb.

Half-siblings
Herb has a younger half-brother, Homer, and an older half-sister, Abbie. Abe also had an affair with a woman he met in England during World War II. Homer met Abbie when Grampa tracked down her mother. While Abbie is never explicitly called a Simpson, she looks and acts just like a female version of Homer.

Adoptive family
Herb was adopted by Mr. Edward Powell and Mrs. Mililani Osler. Mililani gave birth to Coco Powell, Wanda Powell, Carla Powell. Sometime before Herb met Homer, Edward and Mililani told Herb he was adopted, which upset Herb as it left him with no feeling of having a family.

Behind the Laughter
After "Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?", Herb Powell has remained unseen character for 20 seasons, apart from his brief cameo in "The Heartbroke Kid", where he was seen in a picture. Also, Herb has remained an unseen character in the comics, apart from the comic story Battle For The Barks Billions, where he (again) only appeared in a picture. On September 1, 2012, Danny DeVito posted on his Twitter account that he would voice Herb in a season 24 episode, for one line only. He voiced the line the day before (August 31, 2012). He voiced voice Herb in "Changing of the Guardian".

Bernice Hibbert

}}
Bernice Hibbert is Dr. Hibbert’s recovering alcoholic wife, voiced by Tress MacNeille. Although she is known as something of a heavy drinker, Mrs. Hibbert remains one of The Simpsons’ less notable, saner characters. This has been joked about on at least one occasion (in "Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment", she faints, along with other imbibers of renown, upon reading the news that Prohibition has been introduced in Springfield). Bernice has at least three children with Dr. Hibbert, two boys and a girl, and also laughs just like her husband. Their marriage may be in trouble, which is referenced in "Dude, Where's My Ranch?".

She is seen in "Lisa the Vegetarian" with Julius at Homer's BBQ. In early episodes she is named Sylvia. In Virtual Springfield, she is seen twice, once called Mary Hibbert and once, in a yearbook, called Clarice Rashad in a takeoff on the Clair Huxtable character from the Cosby Show, and Phylicia Rashād, the actress who played her.

Trivia
*Whilst exploring the town in The Simpsons Game, Bernice can sometime be seen having a conversation with Carl Carlson; discussing a past relationship they had before she was married to Dr. Hibbert. Although, because it's a video game, this may not be canon. In recent seasons of the show she seems to make a lot more appearances, but it is usually a small part that she plays or just background role.

Julius M Hibbert, M.D., better known as Dr. Hibbert, is Springfield's most prominent and competent doctor, though he sometimes makes no effort to hide or makes light of his high prices. Hibbert is very good-natured, and is known for finding a reason to laugh at nearly every situation.

Biography
Dr. Hibbert is the Simpsons, kind-hearted family doctor, a genius, a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Mensa member. Hibbert is noticeably less dysfunctional than just about everyone else, though he does have a bizarre tendency to chuckle at inappropriate moments. He also gives questionable solutions to certain medical problems. For example, when Maggie saved Homer from drowning, he replied to Marge's question about how a baby can save the life of a full-grown man, saying "It's very simple. When an adult's life is in danger, a child can summon superhuman strength!" When Homer challenged Red Barclay to eat the Sir Loins-a-Lot steak in a contest, Marge feared that Homer might choke on a part of the steak, while Dr. Hibbert claimed that since being 12% owner of The Slaughterhouse (the restaurant they were eating at), his dietary advice suggests "the occasional eating contest". However, when Red dies from "beef poisoning", he attributes the cause to another restaurant.

In addition to working at Springfield General Hospital, Hibbert runs the Dr. Julius Hibbert, M.D. Family Practice where he showed Lisa a video about DNA. Homer also once took the kids to Hibbert's family practice to get them caught up on their inoculations.

There are hints that Dr. Hibbert is not above dubious medical practices either. After Marge talks him out of buying an unsuitable house, he tells her if she ever need a prescription, "no questions asked..." On another occasion, he buys one of Bart's T-Shirts with the legend "DO NOT RESUSCITATE" remarking that it could get him out of some sticky situations. When he realized that Marge was initially unenthusiastic about having a third child, he implied that a healthy baby could bring in as much as $60,000 on the black market. Hibbert covered for himself against Marge's horrified reaction by saying that if she had replied any other way, she would be sent to prison, claiming that it was "just a test".

Despite his seemingly honest and good-hearted personality, there is evidence that he is, at heart, a committed mercenary. Hibbert announces to Homer that his heart operation will cost $30,000. When Homer has a heart attack in front of him in response to this news, he says, unmoved, "I'm afraid it's now $40,000" (hinting that instead of a triple bypass, it became a quadruple bypass). After Homer's baby-proofing business eliminates child injuries in Springfield, Hibbert is seen holding a cooing infant and complaining that there are not any scratches on him, and he has got boat payments. Hibbert is once shown as running an "Health maintenance organization" ("Hibbert's Money-Making Organization"). He has also been interviewed on television sporting a baseball cap and chain blatantly advertising the wares of pharmaceutical companies. The "interview" ends with him joining in a choreographed raunchy dance routine with several attractive female dancers promoting Pfizer products. He is a committed Republican and attends Springfield's Republican meetings alongside Mr. Burns and Rainier Wolfcastle. Hibbert also freely wears fur coats, believing that while fur itself may not be murder, "paying for it sure is!"

While Hibbert is usually competent and responsible, it was once suggested that he did not have a legal license in medicine, since when Lisa was going to say who has been practicing medicine without a license (who is actually Homer), Hibbert tugs his collar nervously. In addition, he once tricked Homer into signing a malpractice waiver, after his medication caused Bart to lose his hearing, by making him "test out his signature" on the waiver.

There is some evidence of serious incompetence on the part of Doctor Hibbert. It is once revealed that the reason the crayon in Homer's brain was never discovered was because he covered up the crayon with his thumb thereby suggesting he was not even looking at Homer's x-rays before picking them up. Also, Doctor Hibbert once checks Sideshow Bob's pulse before pronouncing him dead, then he throws Bob's hand away because he is touching a dead person.

His hairstyle has varied over the years (afro, dreadlocks, Mr. T-style Mohawk, etc.), appropriate for the time period. At least one of Hibbert's cars is a green Mercedes-Benz G500, he also had a silver Volvo 850 sedan, and he once mentioned his Porsche keys. He was seen muttering angrily over a "rusty tailgate" on a generic-looking station wagon.

He and his family live next to the Wiggum family.

Dr. Hibbert supposedly attended Johns Hopkins University, and evidence indicates he was probably born in Alabama. To pay for medical college, he performed as a male stripper under the pseudonym "Malcolm Sex", claiming he would "satisfy the ladies by any means necessary". He has since been seen running an adult education class in "How to Strip for Your Wife", which Homer briefly attended.

Family
Dr. Hibbert is married; he and his wife Bernice have three children, two boys and a girl. When his entire family is seen together, they appear to be similar to the The Cosby Show. His marriage seems to have some problems according to some moments together, such as being filmed by the "Kiss cam" at the stadium and Hibbert saying they don't like public relations.

It is implied that he and Bleeding Gums Murphy are long-lost brothers; Hibbert says he has a long-lost brother who is a jazz musician, and Murphy says he has a brother who is a doctor that chuckles at inappropriate times, but somehow the two don't put these clues together. Hibbert also bears a striking resemblance to the director of the Shelbyville orphanage, who mentions a personal quest to find his long-lost twin to an indifferent Homer.

He owns a poodle called Rosa Barks who was impregnated by Santa's Little Helper. Unhappy with a litter of Greyhound/poodle puppies, Dr. Hibbert leaves the puppies in the care of the Simpsons. Lisa and Bart distribute the puppies around Springfield. The known recipients of the puppies were Krusty, Snake and Groundskeeper Willie.

Non-canon
Noncanon
Hibbert has inhabited a skull-shape island, where he transforms all of his visitants into animals.
Dr. Hibbert once asked Homer to pick up diapers on the street for Apu's Octuplets.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out
The Simpsons: Tapped Out characters/Doctors

Behind the Laughter
Although he wasn't originally based on Bill Cosby's character Dr. Cliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show, when the Fox network moved The Simpsons to Thursdays opposite NBC's top-rated Cosby Show, the staff made Hibbert more of a parody of Huxtable. Hibbert even owns a collection of rather horrid sweaters, just like Dr. Huxtable. Hibbert is always given a new hairdo in flashback appearances, such as an afro, dreads or a Mr. T-like mohawk.

Comparing Dr. Hibbert and Dr. Nick
A tongue-in-cheek analysis in the Canadian Medical Association Journal compares the services of Dr. Hibbert and Dr. Nick Riviera, a quack physician often used by the Simpsons as a cheaper alternative source of medical advice. While Dr. Hibbert is praised for his sense of humor and quality of care, it ultimately concludes that Dr. Nick is a better role model for physicians; Dr. Hibbert is a paternalistic and wasteful physician, unlike Dr. Nick, who strives to cut costs and does his best to avoid the coroner.
