Movementarianism
Hi, Your edit to the Movementarianism article keeps getting reverted because the section in particular is referring to Bart's brainwashing by the cult, not Maggie or Database. Therefore, they are irrelevant to the section. Also, Nancy is best known for voicing Bart so that is the only character who needs mentioning. Please do not add it again and please read Wikisimpsons:Only revert once. Thank you, The Solar Dragon 15:43, September 26, 2019 (EDT)

But Maggie and Database are both characters that are voiced by Nancy. And of course they got brainwashed too. You saw Database when Lisa was ranting that the system was wrong. And Maggie had Barney the dinosaur. Yes, she might've not voiced them in the episode, but they're still Nancy characters nonetheless.Dthomas20
:Doesn't matter. The segment was about Bart, Nancy is best known for voicing Bart, rather than other characters. The Solar Dragon 06:58, September 27, 2019 (EDT)

At least she didn't leave the show like Isaac Hayes left South Park. If they mention the word even once, bye bye Nancy! Dthomas20

Kevin Michael Richardson‎
Hi, can you leave adding Kevin Michael Richardson‎'s credits to his page please? I do this to every crew article twice a year, one in the mid-season break, one at the end of the season. Otherwise, it gets too much work to update all pages after every episode and mistakes can be made. Thank you, The Solar Dragon 11:00, November 18, 2019 (EST)

I'm sorry, I just want to be part of the editing. Are you the creator of this site?

The Bart of War/References

2019-11-15T16:59:34Z

Dthomas20:

TabR

Cultural references
*The episode title is a reference to The Art of War by Sun Tzu.
*Bart and Milhouse are seen watching an episode of South Park, in which Stan, Kyle, and Cartman are attending a concert with a murderous O.J. Simpson. This was in response to a South Park episode entitled, "Simpsons Already Did It", in which Butters finds that all of his original ideas were previously used on The Simpsons, and is subsequently driven insane. The episode references many specific Simpsons episodes, scenarios, and characters.
*When Bart and Milhouse ride on a cart in Ned's house with two VHS tapes and a VCR the tapes are:
**Girls Gone Mild: A reference to the adult entertainment franchise Girls Gone Wild.
**Debbie Does Penance: A reference to the pornographic film Debbie Does Dallas.
*After Bart and Milhouse are caught in Ned's room of Beatles memorabilia, Homer plays a set of Beatles bobbleheads like bongo drums:
**First he says, "Look at me, I'm Brian Epstein!", referring to Epstein's having been the group's manager early in their careers.
**Then he says, "Now I'm Michael Jackson!" and says (in a high-pitched falsetto voice), "I own all your songs, losers!", a reference to Jackson's having purchased the publishing rights to most of the group's music.
*The song "One Tin Soldier" plays over the montage of the Cavalry Kids and Pre-teen Braves sabotaging each other's projects.
*"The Cavalry Kids' (actually the Pre-Teen Braves') Version of the National Anthem" is a parody of "The Star-Spangled Banner".
*Marge is holding the Québec flag along with the Canadian flag when they are singing "O Canada". This is a reference to how the French-Canadian province for years now have wanted to become an independent nation.

Trivia
*Several of the people fighting each other have some sort of connection or similarity.
**Martin vs. Database (both nerds).
**Nelson vs. Jimbo (both bullies).
**Apu vs. Comic Book Guy (both local business owners).
**Squeaky-voiced teen vs. Raphael (both stuck in several dead-end jobs)
**Patty vs. Selma (siblings)
**Drederick Tatum vs. Moe (both boxers)
**Mr. Largo vs. Disco Stu (both music lovers)
**Superintendent Chalmers vs. Principal Skinner (school administrators)
*In the panning shot of people fighting, Mrs. Krabappel and Bumblebee man run into each other and both get knocked out.
*Inside Ned's secret Beatles room:
**A book called "Learning Carpentry with the Beatles",
**A poster for Beatles shampoo,
**Ringo's drums,
**4 wigs,
**A "Beatles Junior Guitar" record album,
**A Beatles lunchbox,
**A Beatles coffee mug,
**Mop Top Pop,
**An autographed photo of the Beatles,
**Beatles figurines,
**The Beatles "Ed Sullivan Show" suits,
**Knee-High Beatles figures,
**A waste paper basket,
**A "A Hard Day's Night" poster,
**A Blue Meanie doll,
**A "Help!" poster,
**A "Let it Be" poster,
**A "Help!" display with gloved hands that reads "Help is Here',
**A turntable,
**A jukebox,

**Several framed Beatles LP covers,
**A gold record,
**A park bench,
**An electric guitar,
**A Peter Max-style poster of John Lennon and,
**Beatles bobble heads.
**The Pre-Teen Braves are all Nancy boys.

Continuity
*Dr. Hibbert and Dr. Nick are seen fighting each other. They previously fought during the soccer riot. ("The Cartridge Family").
*Drederick Tatum beating up Moe may be a callback to Moe's boxing career. ("The Homer They Fall").

Goofs
*In the panning shot of people fighting, Dr. Hibbert and Dr. Nick can be seen behind Rainier Wolfcastle, but they then suddenly disappear.
*When people run onto the baseball field, one group of people are running straight over what's supposed to be the seating areas.
*In the aforementioned shot, Kent Brockman is wearing a short sleeved, blue shirt, however in the panning shot of people fighting, he's wearing his regular attire.
*When the fight scene starts, Bart and Milhouse move all the way from the centerfield to the edge of the pitch and back again.
*When Chase tells Homer to lay off Kirk, Moe is slightly off-model.
*When the fighting starts Carl is talking to Lenny in the seating area, but a few moments later, Carl is on the field fighting an off-screen opponent.

The Michael Clarke Duncan-type (real name not known) was an inmate, and later a guard, at Springfield Penitentiary.

History
He apparently enjoyed killing people, as he tried to strangle Homer. He then asked his pet mouse mouse, Mr. Jingles, if he wanted some cornbread, but then he shouted that he was going to kill him.

He and Mr. Burns were cellmates when Burns was imprisoned for art theft. The Duncan-type helped cleanse Burns of his evil; after Burns was released he tried to convert Fat Tony.

He later became a guard at the prison. When Bart suspected that his new neighbor Walt Warren was actually Sideshow Bob, the Duncan-type showed him Sideshow Bob in his cell to prove that Walt wasn't Bob.

At some point, he became a prisoner again and was helping out picking up rubbish along the highway whilst singing a song. He found a packet of cigarettes and kept them. He later helped to search for Bart.

Behind the Laughter
*His appearance is similar to that of the character John Coffey from The Green Mile, played by Michael Clarke Duncan.
**Michael Clarke Duncan was initially intended to voice this character, but he declined.
Kevin Michael Richardson voices the prisoner in American History X-Cellent, but Hank Azaria voices him in The Bob Next Door. Kevin would reprise his role in Gone Boy.

Chase, commonly known as Pyro, is an American Gladiator.

History
He dated Luann for a time after she divorced from Kirk. When Bart and Pyro first met, Pyro impressed Bart when he revealed that smashing a chair against his didn't even cause him to flinch. Bart later attempted to repeat the trick on Homer while he was bathing. Homer, however, ended up crying in agony.

When Otto (dressed as State Comptroller Atkins) asked the audience at Lisa's award ceremony if any of them have ever cheated on their wives or husbands, Kirk was seen glaring at Pyro and Luann implying their relationship started before the divorce.

Wendell Borton is a student at Springfield Elementary School. His personal trait is that he always appears pale and sickly, and is prone to throwing up with very little provocation.

History
Wendell is a classmate of Bart Simpson in Mrs. Krabappel's fourth grade class. He is most seen playing with classmates such as Richard and Lewis. He is also good friends with Martin Prince, Jr. and helped him with his election as class president (one of the 2 votes for Martin) against Bart.

He is considered one of the nerds of Springfield Elementary School along with Martin, Database and several others making him a constant and easy target of Kearney and his colleagues. Wendell was also one of the children who become stranded on the island with his fellow Model U.N. Club members. He is very often sick in class or in the hallways of Springfield Elementary (Groundskeeper Willie is used to it by now), and on the school bus especially with Otto driving.

Wendell once threw up at the end of a bus ride after Bart patted him on the back (ironically, congratulating him for making it through the ride without getting sick), and another time he hurled after his school bus crashed off a bridge.

Wendell was among the few survivors when the remaining students were all in one classroom. He was, however, given a detention and sent to the principal's office when his pencil slipped off his desk, thus sealing his fate.

Wendell did not appear white or speak until the episode "Homer's Odyssey".

The episode "Little Big Girl" reveals Wendell is of Mexican descent.

:I wouldn't release the information on the wiki unless I was 100% sure of it. And to me, getting info directly from Al Jean is the best source we can have, better than other people's tweets, news sites etc. How much false info have we posted? Very little. And if a mistake is made, it's usually not our fault, it's because of news sites reporting stuff. i.e. Dan Fouts came from The Futon Critic. Turned out to be wrong. It's not like all these sites can be trusted 100%. I've posted a reply there anyway (turns out I have an account. lol) So hopefully that'll make them happy. == Episode Number after TGP ==
Hi Solar. Now that "The Great Phatsby" has aired, we should consider it as one episode or two episodes (pt1 & pt2)? I'm asking you 'cause FOX considered TGP "one" episode (S28E12), though it has 2 production episodes (WABF04/05). What do you think? This is basically because I don't know how to update the "Epnumber", "Episode credits" and "Mostrecentep" templates in :Category:Frequently updated templates. :::::Ok. I assume that part one starts when the "episode" starts and ends with the scene before narrator Homer says sth like "Fitzgerald never said anything about second parts on american TV shows" ('cause that is right half the full episode). I think that we have to treat the two parts as different episodes (e.g. Praline only appears in part two, so Taraji P. Henson should only be listed as guest star in part two; there's a harry potter reference at the end of part one, so it should only be on part one's references page; ...). == Milhouse / Wonder Years ==
I've been looking for more references to The Wonder Years, and one thing that keeps coming up is that Milhouse was designed as a caricature of Wonder Years character Paul Pfeiffer (best friend of main character Kevin Arnold), and in fact we have that on Milhouse's article. ----
Google is your friend; you just have to ask it the right questions. I searched for "Milhouse caricature of Paul Pfeiffer" (without the quotes), and I found some documentation of David Silverman shooting down the notion of Milhouse being designed as a caricature of Paul Pfeiffer.
* Story I first saw in the Google search results:
* Tweet from Silverman (cited in the above story):
I think it's worth leaving the picture and speculation in Milhouse's article, but make sure it's only mentioned in the BtL section. Even though it's not true, it is part of the (real-life) history of the character. But we should add the refutation from Silverman and document it with the link to the tweet. The Web is so rife with references to the Milhouse/Pfeiffer resemblance being intentional that it's practically a meme, and it's possible that some folks may be upset to see it busted. -- Mythigator (talk) 13:21, August 12, 2017 (EDT)
: Added to Milhouse's article as discussed. -- Mythigator (talk) 16:01, October 9, 2017 (EDT)

Article for Hawkeye Pierce?
With all the digging I've been doing into M*A*S*H and The Simpsons, I'm thinking we should make an article for Hawkeye Pierce. We actually have as much canon information for Hawkeye (including an image) as we do for Max Klinger, and the Klinger article survived a fairly spirited round of deletion discussion, IIRC. A Hawkeye article wold also allow for tidying up some links on other M*A*S*H-related articles. == Lenny Kravitz photo ==
As you might have gathered, I've been working on the common cast and crew between The Simspons and The Hunger Games (no more creating redlinks, I promise :-) ) and I've noticed that our article for Lenny Kravitz (real-life) doesn't have a photo. Is there some reason why we can't use his photo from Wikipedia? The permissions info on that photo says that it needs to be attributed to the photographer if it's used outside Wikimedia, which doesn't strike me as being much of a problem. Or is there some other issue that I'm not noticing? If it turns out there's no problem with our using the photo, I'm willing to add it and make sure the photographer gets due credit. -- Mythigator (talk) 23:48, October 4, 2017 (EDT)
:We removed the photo we had a while ago as we received an email from someone who was representing Lenny Kravitz and asked us to take down the image or face consequences. As a result, it would be best if we don't have an image of him on the wiki. It's stupid and it sucks, but I don't want to risk anything bad happening, so it would be for the best we leave the page imageless.
:As for the red links, that's not the issue. Every credited person has an article. If they're not credited, we don't give them an article, unless they work on many episodes and there's a decent source to show they did. IMDb can be edited by anyone and I've often found incorrect information on IMDb, although I do my best to correct it if I do, or add that the people are uncredited etc. The Solar Dragon 06:06, October 5, 2017 (EDT)

Comic Book Woman in "Mayored to the Mob"
In "Mayored to the Mob", there's a scene where a young woman visits Comic Book Guy's booth at the Con and they have a "moment" while some romantic Star Trek music plays in the background. However, it's all for naught as he shoots her down when she (indirectly) asks him to remove the SweeTarts from his beard. She isn't given a name, but she does have a couple of lines of dialogue and Maggie Roswell has a voice credit in the episode for "Comic Book Lady". Should she get an article by that title? We do have an article for a comic story character called Comic Book Gal, but she's clearly not the same person. I'm certainly willing to make the article if that sounds like a good plan; after all, I might as well do the sweat work to go with the brain work.

BTW, I got hired! It is a data analysis position with a local health agency. I'll furnish more detail and update my user page once I've actually started work. Apparently this employer's pre-employment screening process is rather extensive, and there are a couple of steps still remaining. It looks like I finally hit my "bad luck" quota and things started turning around. I interviewed on Friday the 13th (of October), had a bumper-scraping incident in a parking lot on my way to the interview, and discovered that I had left a sweater vest at an appointment earlier in the day. == Simpsons Fandom plagiarism again, and this time it's mutual ==
An anonymous IP left notes about a couple of references on the Peanuts references article. I did a Google search to check if they were valid, and the first search result was the Peanuts references article on Fandom. I got curious and checked it out, and found some entries that I had written and that were copied word-for-word from our article to Fandom. In the process, I also noticed that the notes the IP had left on our Peanuts article were copied word-for-word from Fandom. I rolled back the IP's changes and left them a warning message about plagiarism, including a link to our policy page on the topic. I then went onto Fandom and left RRabbit42 a note on his message wall about the situation. I let Roger know I was open to further contact about the plagiarism issue, so now it's just a case of wait and see whether and how he responds. -- Mythigator (talk) 02:25, August 10, 2019 (EDT)

The IP had more than enough material to create a franchise article, so there's a really good start already done. -- Mythigator (talk) 23:46, August 17, 2019 (EDT)
:Yes, they should be separate articles. The Solar Dragon 06:55, August 18, 2019 (EDT)
::Thought so, so I'll go ahead and get rolling on that article. Probably also Laverne & Shirley while I'm at it. L&S is part of the same franchise (gotta love '70s TV sometimes) but I think there are enough references to it for the show to get its own article. -- Mythigator (talk) 10:01, August 18, 2019 (EDT)

Hi, when is this used "Any unmarked characters were non-speaking but had roles in the episode other than background cameos."? FatHomerTalk 16:03, September 21, 2019 (EDT)
:If the camera lingers on a character and they're the focus of a shot, or the character just doesn't speak (i.e. animals). These are what that comes under. The Solar Dragon 18:07, September 21, 2019 (EDT)
::I still think it's a bit ambiguous. What is a cameo then? Also if an animal for example barks, wouldn't that be considered voiced? If a character appears in a chanting mob would that character be voiced or cameo? FatHomerTalk 08:16, September 22, 2019 (EDT)
:::Cameos are minor appearances where the character doesn't do anything. Barks etc. do not count as voices, unless an actor is credited for that voice (i.e. Dan is for SLH sometimes). An example of a character not being voiced but not being a cameo either is Elliot from "A Star Is Burns". He was the focus of the shot, and Burns was talking to him. But he didn't speak. As for crowds/mobs, unless a character's voice can be made out specifically, they don't count as voiced. But Maggie and Database are both characters that are voiced by Nancy. And of course they got brainwashed too. You saw Database when Lisa was ranting that the system was wrong. And Maggie had Barney the dinosaur. Yes, she might've not voiced them in the episode, but they're still Nancy characters nonetheless.

Movementarianism, whose followers are known as Movementarians, is an evil brainwashing cult which for a brief time ensnared many of Springfield's citizens. The Movementarians are led by a mysterious figure known only as "The Leader" who is seen only in portrait.

Recruitment
The process of getting new members involves the following steps:
# Get attention of potential members at airports and other public places and invite them to a free weekend retreat.
# At said weekend retreat, show the attendees brainwashing films. Should that fail, use other techniques like feeding them low-protein gruel, starting large chants or forcing them to sit before the circle of judgment.
# Once members are ensnared, force them to hand over their life savings and the deed to their house. Then, force them to move into the movementarian compound.

Beliefs
The Movementarians believe that their religious figurehead - The Leader - will one day open the doors of "The Forbidden Barn" and lead them to the planet of "Blisstonia" (well known for its high levels of Bliss). The Cult members live in a Movementarian compound, where they do backbreaking labor all day and watch as the Leader rides around in what appears to be a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. Cultists are forced to perform labor for thousands of years before being able to travel to Blisstonia. The religion also includes a mass marriage in which all of its members are matched up on a printout. These marriages include same sex marriage and the marriage of parents and children.

The Leader's will is actually carried out by a small group of especially devoted followers who recruit members, perform rituals (such as the mass marriage) and run the compounds. The Leader has also has a cadre of lawyers at his service, including the Blue-Haired Lawyer.

The Leader
The Leader
The Leader is a mysterious figurehead who is worshiped completely by the Cult followers. He aspires to brainwash and dominate the will of the people of Springfield and take their money. His followers try to bend others' wills to worship the leader via methods such as chanting, brainwashing videos and low protein gruel. The Leader lives in the "Forbidden Barn," and would sometimes observe the workers, while driving around in a black limo, and would wave his visible white-gloved hand to the people. In the end, it is revealed that The Leader is actually a fraud after Homer opened the doors to The Forbidden Barn. The cultists see a spaceship inside, which rises but eventually falls apart, revealing the Leader who is riding a flying bicycle filled with money bags, and making spaceship sounds with wax paper and a comb. At first, Kent Brockman was extremely skeptical of the leader, even starting a brief expose in which an image of the Leader looking like a hick is shown. But, it turns out that the station was bought by The Leader and Kent immediately begins singing his praises.

Trivia
*They have their own choir called The Movementarian Tabernacle Choir.

Behind the Laughter
According to the DVD commentary for the episode, the Movementarians were largely inspired by Scientology, the Jim Jones cult and the Peoples Temple, the Heaven's Gate Cult, the Raelians, the Oneida Society, the Rajneesh movement and Chen Tao. Also, the movementarian compound features elements from the Cult TV series The Prisoner, such as the Rover guard "balloon". The leader himself may be based on L. Ron Hubbard.

The group bears a number of resemblances to the Church of Scientology, the most well known of the above-named groups, such as enticing people with false promises, professing non-mainstream beliefs, wielding great legal power, and exploiting their followers. Ironically, Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, Maggie Simpson and Database is a member of the Church of Scientology. This was likely joked about by Bart's rather fast brainwashing.

*Trees are revealed to be alive.
*The night sky is now used as advertising space, as the stars are rearranged to spell out ad slogans. Two advertisers seen using this medium are Buzz Cola and Cookie Kwan (whose slogan is now "#1 in the western sky").
*While the Internet still exists, many people (including Zia Simpson) go online via the Ultranet, a virtual reality environment that people connect to by plugging cables into ports on their necks.
*Teleporting is now the most common method of travel, but some medical conditions, such as pregnancy, preclude it. Also, if you talk while being teleported, people on the receiving end can hear you.
**Bart's sons go to his apartment by teleporter. Before they arrive, Bart hears them complaining about having to spend Christmas with him.
**In London, Maggie is denied access to the teleporter due to her pregnancy, and is forced to take an airplane flight to Springfield.
*People can get messages sent direct to their brains, called B-Mail. Viruses sent via B-Mail can cause seizures.
*Some people can hear thoughts. It is unknown if they hear them all the time or if it's at will.
*Shape-changing tattoos now exist, evidently based on holograms or similar technology. Zia has one on her left upper arm.
*Some body parts can be replaced by ordering new ones. Homer promises Marge some "future sex", meaning that it'll happen a week from tomorrow, as "That's when the new penis gets here."

Goofs
*Lisa mentions that it's Dr. Seuss' birthday. However, he was born on March 2, 1904 and the episode takes place just before Christmas. (It is possible, with all that has changed in the future, that Christmas is now observed in March.)
*Even though Edna was killed, she is still able to send a friend request to Lisa on the Ultranet. (Edna could have made the friend request BEFORE she was killed, and Lisa is only now seeing the request. We're given the impression that Lisa isn't a very frequent user of the Ultranet.)
*When Bart & Lisa get drunk, their voice actresses were actually slipping into their real voices.

Continuity
*Homer talks about it being the future, like he did in "Bart to the Future".
*Mr. Burns last released the hounds at Christmas in "Dude, Where's My Ranch?".
*Bart's ex-wife Jenda was previously seen as his girlfriend in "Future-Drama", another future-set episode.
*One of the categories on the Ultranet Facebook is "The Simpsons go to.." and shows pictures of various people the Simpsons have met when they've visited other countries:
**Ugolin from "The Crepes of Wrath".
**Andy and the guy with the giant boot from "Bart vs. Australia".
**Kitenge from "Simpson Safari".
**Tony Blair and Queen Elizabeth II from "The Regina Monologues".
**The guy in the Toucan costume from "Blame It on Lisa".
**The Guinness brewer from "In the Name of the Grandfather".
**Sakatumi from "Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo".
**Jakob from "The Greatest Story Ever D'ohed".
*The Big Digi-Ben appears. ("Lisa's Wedding")

"The Joy of Sect" is the one hundred and ninety first episode of The Simpsons and the thirteenth episode of the ninth season.

Synopsis
:"Along with the majority of Springfield, Homer and company are lured into the Movementarian cult by a slick pamphlet and tantalizing promises. But as Marge begins to realize that the cult only has money on its mind, she must try her hand at deprogramming to rescue her family."

Plot
Homer takes Bart to the airport to greet the local football team after their championship loss. At the airport, Homer meets Glen and Jane, a pair of recruiters for a new religion called Movementarianism. They invite Homer to an introductory session at their resort, where a number of Springfield residents watch a video about the religion. The video explains that the Movementarians plan to take a spaceship to the planet Blisstonia. They are guided by a mysterious male figure known only as "The Leader." Most of the attendees are brainwashed into worshipping The Leader, but Homer does not pay enough attention to the video to be affected. After trying other methods, Glen and Jane finally convert him by singing the theme to Batman (TV series), replacing the word Batman with the word Leader.

After Homer joins the sect, he moves his family to the Movementarian compound. The compound is a fenced agricultural facility where everyone is forced to grow and harvest lima beans from dawn to dusk. The Leader lives in a "Forbidden Barn", where his spaceship is supposedly stored. He only appears briefly, riding through the fields in a Rolls-Royce.

As Movementarianism gains popularity, Mr. Burns decides to start his own religion, jealous of The Leader's tax-exempt status. Burns declares himself a god at a grand display atop one of his buildings, with Springfield residents and Burns's employees looking on. However, the Springfieldians are unconvinced after his outfit catches fire in a pyrotechnics display. Although defiant at first, the Simpson children are converted to Movementarianism. Bart plans to cause trouble with his "Li'l Bastard Mischief Kit," but the Movementarians outwit him with a "Li'l Bastard Brainwashing Kit." Lisa loathes that "The Leader" is the answer to every question at the Movementarian school, but she complies for the sake of her grades. Maggie and the other babies are brainwashed by Barney the Dinosaur, who sings them a song about The Leader. Marge is the only family member to resist the Movementarians' methods, and she escapes from the compound, narrowly avoiding many obstacles along the way. Outside, she finds Reverend Lovejoy, Ned Flanders, and Groundskeeper Willie, and with their help, she poses as The Leader and tricks her family into leaving with her.

In Flanders's rumpus room, Marge deprograms her children by promising them what appear to be hover-bikes. In reality, Marge had suspended regular bikes from the ceiling with wires, and Flanders provided hover-bike sound effects while hidden in a closet. Homer yields after Ned offers him a beer, but just as the first drop lands on Homer's tongue, he is captured by the Movementarians' lawyers. Back at the compound, Homer tells a crowd of Movementarians that he is no longer brainwashed thanks to that one drop of beer. He opens the doors of the Forbidden Barn, hoping to expose the religion as a fraud. However, he is surprised to find "one hell of a giant spaceship", and The Leader proclaims that, due to Homer's "lack of faith", humanity will never reach Blisstonia. The Springfieldians believe this at first, but as the spaceship begins to fly away, it falls apart, revealing The Leader on a pedal-powered aircraft departing with everyone's money. Everyone's faith is broken, but The Leader does not fly very far, crashing on Cletus's front porch.

As the Simpsons return home, Lisa remarks, "It's wonderful to think for ourselves again." However, the family soon becomes hypnotized by a FOX television commercial, which declares, "You are watching FOX." In unison, the family responds, "We are watching FOX."

Production
Development
The episode was the second and last episode written by Steve O'Donnell and was based on an idea from David Mirkin. Mirkin had been the show runner during seasons five and six, but had been brought back to run two episodes during the ninth season. He said he was attracted to the notion of parodying cults because they are "comical, interesting and twisted." The main group of writers that worked on the episode were Mirkin, O'Donnell, Jace Richdale and Kevin Curran. The episode's title "The Joy of Sect" was pitched by Richdale. Steven Dean Moore directed the episode.

Aspects of the Movementarians were inspired by, among other phenomena, Scientology, Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple, the Unification Church, the Heaven's Gate group, the Oneida Community, and Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. In particular, the leader driving through the fields in a Rolls Royce was partly inspired by the Bhagwans, and the notion of holding people inside the camp against their will was a reference to Jim Jones. The name "Movementarians" itself was simply chosen for its awkward sound. The scene during the six-hour orientation video where those who get up to leave are induced to stay through peer pressure and groupthink was a reference to the Moonies and the est Training. The show's producers acknowledged that the ending scene of the episode was a poke at FOX as "being the evil mind controlling network." The episode's script was written in 1997, at roughly the same time that the members of the Heaven's Gate cult committed Mass suicide. The writers noticed strange parallels between Mirkin's first draft and Heaven's Gate, including the belief in the arrival of a spaceship and the group's members wearing matching clothes and odd sneakers. Because of these coincidences, several elements of the episode were changed so that it would be more sensitive in the wake of the suicides.

Themes
Chris Turner's book Planet Simpson describes the Movementarians as a cross between the Church of Scientology and Raelism, with lesser influences from Sun Myung Moon and Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Moon's ideas of constant social interaction with very little privacy, as well as the mass marriages were referenced in the episode, as was Osho, who was known for his large fleet of Rolls Royces which he would drive daily through his compound, waving to his followers. Planet Simpson also notes the Simpsons' chant at the conclusion of the episode as evidence of a "true high-growth quasi-religious cult of our time," referring to television. The book refers to a "Cult of Pop," which it describes as "a fast growing mutation ersatz religion that has filled the gaping hole in the West's social fabric where organized religion used to be". Martin Hunt of FACTnet notes several similarities between the Movementarians and the Church of Scientology. "The Leader" physically resembles L. Ron Hubbard; the Movementarians' "trillion year labor contract" alludes to the Sea Org's billion year contract; and both groups make extensive use of litigation. The A.V. Club analyzes the episode in a piece called "Springfield joins a cult", comparing the Movementarians' plans to travel to "Blisstonia" to Heaven's Gate's promises of bliss after traveling to the Hale-Bopp comet. However, it also notes that "The Joy of Sect" is a commentary on organized religion in general, quoting Bart as saying, "Church, cult, cult, church. So we get bored someplace else every Sunday." having joined in 1991. Pinsky notes that Matt Groening later "took a shot at Scientology" in Futurama with the fictional religion "Church of Robotology". Groening said he received a call from the Church of Scientology concerned about the use of a similar name.

Reception
"The Joy of Sect" was viewed by approximately 9.4 million households and garnered a 9.6 Nielsen rating, making it the fourth highest-rated show on the FOX network the week it aired.

Jeff Shalda of The Simpsons Archive used the episode as an example of one of the "good qualities present in The Simpsons," while analyzing why some other aspects of The Simpsons make Christians upset. The book I Can't Believe It's a Bigger and Better Updated Unofficial Simpsons Guide commented that the episode was "an odd one," with "a lot of good moments," and went on to state that it was "a nice twist to see Burns determined to be loved." However, the book also noted that "The Joy of Sect" is "another one where the central joke isn't strong enough to last the whole episode." In a 2006 article in USA Today, "The Joy of Sect" was highlighted among the six best episodes of season 9, along with "Trash of the Titans," "The Last Temptation of Krust," "The Cartridge Family," "Dumbbell Indemnity," and "Das Bus."<ref>{{cite news | last = Clark | first = Mike | coauthors = | title = New on DVD | work = USA Today | pages = | language = | publisher = Gannett Co. This episode is the origin of the term "Jerkass Homer," used by alt.tv.Simpsons members to describe a perceived change in Homer's personality around season nine or so. Homer shouts "Outta my way, Jerkass!" while driving into the Movementarian compound, and once again when he's told there will be a free movie.
