Cultural references[edit]
- Star Trek XII: So Very Tired is based on the then recently released Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It is also a reference to the progression of the series of movies based on Star Trek's original series. The later movies, especially V and VI, are often lampooned due to the characters' obvious increasing age and the accelerating weight gain by the cast, especially Scotty and Uhura.
- Bart replaced Edna Krabappel's birth-control pills with Tic Tacs.
- Homer read TV Guide to Lisa when she was a baby. The front cover of the edition he was reading included a picture of Mr. T and Homer was reading about an episode of Happy Days in which The Fonz, portrayed by Henry Winkler, is worried that he's losing his cool.
- On the turntable, Lisa plays the "Sabre Dance" movement in the Gayane ballet when Bart is spining on the fan.
- When Edna tells Homer that Bart could grow up to become Chief Justice of the United States, Homer thinks of American former chiefs John Marshall, Charles Evans Hughes and Warren E. Burger.
- Homer threatens Abe on putting him in the crooked rest home they saw on 60 Minutes.

Trivia[edit]
- Lisa says that Michael Jackson and Dustin Hoffman were voice actors in the Itchy & Scratchy Movie, and that "they did not use their real names, but you could tell it was them". This was reference to the fact that Jackson and Hoffman have contributed to The Simpsons episodes under the respective pseudonyms of John Jay Smith in "Stark Raving Dad" and Sam Etic in "Lisa's Substitute".
- In the scene of forty years into the future, the picture of Bart and caption "DO NOT SELL TO THIS BOY" are still posted in the box office at the Aztec Theater.
- "Steamboat Itchy" is a parody of the classic 1928 Mickey Mouse animated short "Steamboat Willie", with Itchy cast as Mickey and Scratchy as Pete. As such, it is in black-and-white and animated in the style that was prevalent during the 1920s.

- The bride and groom who get covered in blood are Stanley and Martha Peterson from "Principal Charming".
- Maggie also shows an affinity for Homer's car when she repairs it in the comic story Maggie's Crib 21.
- There are also different Itchy and Scratchy movies in The Simpsons Movie and "Adventures in Baby-Getting", the latter in IMAX-3D.
Goofs[edit]
- When Marge passes Maggie driving down the road, her necklace is white instead of its usual red.
- In the long line outside the Aztec theater, Lionel Hutz has Troy McClure's colors.
